- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Relatively painful to read but if you are young, don’t have kids yet and aren’t likely to identify with the characters, you might enjoy the romance aspect.
I found it painful because the heroine was just so intensely unlikable. She is that know-it-all judgmental woman who will look at you in the grocery store and tell you you are limiting your child if you feed her formula. Or if she finds out your kid doesn’t eat gluten you are turning him into a snowflake. She is that internet mom who has an opinion on what your child wears, eats, sleep schedule, etc. you are never correct unless you do exactly what she does. And you are a BAD PARENT if you don’t do what she believes is right. At the start, this woman isn’t even a mom. She is, however, in some vague distant past for some vague unmentioned number of years/months a FORMER TEACHER (TM) of what grade levels we assume was probably elementary, but who knows and therefore knows all about being a parent. It’s annoying on the judgy mom level, but it gets REALLY annoying when this supposed educator is written by an author who obviously knows nothing about education.
As a former (actual) teacher myself, and the mother of a now grown gifted child, the way she dismisses and fights against the dad having a schedule his daughter follows is laughable. In a time of transition, children (and especially gifted children) crave consistency. It makes them feel safe. Of course, this is just the top of the iceberg. The woman is honestly a menace, in a very Dolores Umbridge kind of way, smiling and saying/believing she knows best when her methods aren’t even research or experience based and, in fact, would be disruptive at best and harmful at worst. Somehow her judgy ways “save” dad and daughter from a life of perpetual misery and bad parenting. Yay for bossy know it all’s who fix everything.
Of course, all of that pales in comparison to the fact that we learn early on that she had deliberately gotten pregnant against her husband’s wishes in an attempt to make them “closer” as their marriage floundered- which is an unforgivable violation of another person. She’s just a real peach of a person and despite her sad, pathetic circumstances, I simply could not feel sorry for her or identify with her.
Disappointing. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A sweet story that I enjoyed from the beginning to the end.
