    INTRODUCTION

    One of the greatest minds of his time, Friedrich Nietzsche is probably one of the best known names in philosophy. Ahead of his times in many ways, he was also arguably the most outspoken atheist of the 19th century; indeed, many of his quotes suggest he was not just without religion, but against it.

    Nietzsche was, and still is, greatly revered much due to the boldness of his words, his ability to articulate life and existence in a very unique way and his literary works. Among other subjects, he wrote many texts on morality, religion, philosophy and science.

    In 1889, aged just 44, Nietzsche suffered severe brain damage following a collapse. Though he lived until 1900, he never regained his mental faculties following this collapse. Though at the time the cause was believed to be tertiary syphilis, it is now known with almost certainty that his
