About this ebook
Mankind is no longer at the top of the food chain.
The Sixth Extinction is an apocalyptic tale about a pandemic that sweeps the globe, decimating the human race, leaving humanity struggling to survive. Within three weeks, everything has changed. Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalk the streets.
After a fatal struggle – that gets Juan infected and leads him to sacrifice himself for the good of the others – the group manage to escape the town. Lindell and Terrance drive their newly acquired jeep with the powerful .50 cal machinegun. While in the truck, Jessica’s life hangs in the balance as they try to decide what to do about the length of pipe that is pierced through her thigh. They just hope that when she wakes up, the shock doesn’t kill her. “However, it’s not Jessica who dies first, someone else in the container asks for the priest’s blessing before taking their own life to the shock of everyone watching.
Also, the group doesn’t realize that Capitan Stitt is alive and close on their trail with a small group of surviving men. Stitt only has one thing on his mind – revenge. He will not rest until they are all dead.
Meanwhile, Doctor Bachman is trying to make his way through the bunker in the bulky hazmat suit, trying to reach the surface before his air supply runs out. He realizes he isn’t alone, there are others still alive inside the bunker, and what he learns from them – about what they have witnessed – completely changes the way he sees the pods yet again, and what they represent, and ultimately how that will affect mankind – the pods are gathering an army and are heading for the surface.

Acknowledgments
I would like to thank my older brother, Gary Johnson who went over the raw manuscript with many read-throughs, editorial help, and suggestions, and for not getting us lost as we make our way down through Thailand.
Also to Matthew and Kate Chilcott, Anthony Pike, Victoria Tamkin, Sarah Shapter, and Rachel Shapter.
If you haven’t read the original The Sixth Extinction Series that is set in England: Outbreak, Ruin, Infested, and The Ark, or The First Three Weeks Series, Noah’s Story, Red’s Story, Betty and Lennie’s Story, and Doctor Lazaro’s Story, I would also recommend the complete eight-part series.
As a bonus, it is less than half price.
"Luck is a very thin wire between survival and disaster, and not many people can keep their balance on it."
Hunter S. Thompson
Please note that I am an English author, so I use English spelling throughout. You will see doubled letters (cancelled), ou’s (colour), ‘re’ (centre) ce’s (licence), ise’s (realise), yse’s (paralyse) as well as a few other slight variations from American spelling.
The locations in this book are a fusion of real and imagined, but the events and characters are merely a fabrication of my overactive imagination.

Prologue
A mass extinction, or scientifically named The Sixth Extinction, is also referred to as the Holocene Extinction – the Holocene epoch is a period of time from present to around 10,000 BCE – where a large number of extinctions span numerous plants and animals, including birds, amphibians, arthropods, and mammals.
Four hundred biologists were interviewed in 1998 by New York’s American Museum of Natural History. Seventy percent believe that the world is in the grip of a human-caused mass extinction. They believe that if left unchecked twenty percent of all living things could become extinct by 2028. One famous biologist, E. O Wilson believes that if humans continue to destroy the biosphere, then half of all species on the planet will be extinct within one hundred years.
Almost nine hundred extinctions have been recorded by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources since the 1500s. However, that is just a drop in the ocean, according to the scientific species-area theory; it estimates that one hundred and forty thousand species are becoming extinct every year.
The main reason for the hundreds of thousands of extinctions, which is speeding the sixth extinction along, is due to one mammal – the homosapien. Without intervention, the human race will cause the next mass extinction.
However, it would seem that Mother Nature has a way of making sure that one species does not overpopulate and dominate her planet at the expense of everything else. Viruses and plagues are her way of culling and controlling.
Part Four – The Long Road
1
Alex, and everyone else
In the truck, on the side of the highway
Just outside New York City
Jessica’s screams pierced the air.
Try and keep her quiet,
Lindell shouted to be heard over her screeching.
Frank and Bonnie were trying to stop the bleeding. Luckily, the inch-wide pipe was the only thing stopping her from bleeding out, and as the white-hot pipe had pierced the metal of the truck and then Jessica, it had cauterized the wound. The blood was running because Frank and Bonnie were messing around with it.
Lindell and Alex climbed into the back of the container.
We need to go back to the town, to use their medical equipment,
Bonnie stated, as her hands were getting covered in blood as she held the wound.
Leave the wound, you’re making it worse!
Lindell said. He rubbed a hand over his head. Then he placed his shotgun against the wall.
Not an option,
Lindell said. It’s just too risky. We don’t know how many people are still back there, or how many infected are still swarming in, following the sounds of the explosions, and the trailing smoke.
You’re kidding?
Frank said. The priest knew he was right. They couldn’t risk them all due to one single person. He just didn’t want to hold onto another dying person.
Jessica stopped screaming. She fainted from the pain. Now she was relaxed, and not stressing out; the blood slowed a little.
I’ll go back with someone in the jeep,
Alex volunteered. Then not everyone will be at risk.
We have just acquired the jeep; we can’t afford to lose a vehicle like that, with its weapon.
Lindell didn’t like making calls like this, but he had no choice. Someone had to take charge and take decisions.
Jessica was going pale. The bleeding had clotted around the wounds now they weren’t fussing with it.
Lindell knelt and examined her leg. Either the priest or Bonnie ripped the jeans away from the wound. It revealed a piece of pipe about an inch around, melted either end, with about five inches sticking
