The Sixth Extinction is an apocalyptic tale about a pandemic that sweeps the globe, decimating the human race, leaving humanity struggling to survive. Within three weeks, everything has changed. Social structure has collapsed as the government locks itself away with a select portion of its vast army in deep bunkers, leaving the civilians to their own fate and the infected that stalk the streets.

The fourteen riding inside a shipping container, on the back of a truck, unwittingly find themselves trapped inside a military run town, just outside New York City. At first, everything seemed better – they were somewhere secure, with food and a place to sleep, protected by their country’s army. Then things take a deadly turn as they witness people who are beaten and chained like animals. The group of military personnel have gone AWOL and have decided to create their own version of the future. They have to find a way out. But how, they are surrounded, and they have no weapons?

Doctor Nathan Bachman was moved from one secret military bunker to another as the pod at Groom Lake was believed too dangerous, and a Presidential mandate determined its destruction along with all the others. However, the world was led to believe all the pods have been destroyed, until Bachman learns there’s one still alive in the facility hidden below his very feet, and unbelievably it’s reproducing!

Prologue

A mass extinction, or scientifically named The Sixth Extinction, is also referred to as the Holocene Extinction – the Holocene epoch is a period of time from present to around 10,000 BCE – where a large number of extinctions span numerous plants and animals, including birds, amphibians, arthropods, and mammals.

Four hundred biologists were interviewed in 1998 by New York’s American Museum of Natural History. Seventy percent believe that the world is in the grip of a human-caused mass extinction. They believe that if left unchecked twenty percent of all living things could become extinct by 2028. One famous biologist, E. O Wilson believes that if humans continue to destroy the biosphere, then half of all species on the planet will be extinct within one hundred years.

Almost nine hundred extinctions have been recorded by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources since the 1500s. However, that is just a drop in the ocean, according to the scientific species-area theory; it estimates that one hundred and forty thousand species are becoming extinct every year.

The main reason for the hundreds of thousands of extinctions, which is speeding the sixth extinction along, is due to one mammal – the homosapien. Without intervention, the human race will cause the next mass extinction.

However, it would seem that Mother Nature has a way of making sure that one species does not overpopulate and dominate her planet at the expense of everything else. Viruses and plagues are her way of culling and controlling.

Part One: The Black Spores

In part one, we followed fourteen strangers who were brought together due to the need for survival. After three weeks of going it alone, they chose to band together. They rode inside a transport container on the back of a truck, heading out of New York City and towards hope, and hopefully somewhere they could eke out a living away from the infection and those carrying it.

After only one day traveling they are already getting on each other’s nerves.

They stop at a Marriot Hotel for the night, seeking shelter, and with any luck, anything edible that’s been left behind.

However, while tediously searching the rooms one by one, they stumble on a Popper. They race for their lives, hiding in a stairwell. Only to discover more creatures are heading up to their location.

We also followed the progress of Doctor Bachman, a scientist working at Area 51, where one of the seven pods has been studied since 1957.

While a top-ranking General and the Director of the CIA are touring the facility, it is discovered that the pod is admitting some kind of frequency – sending out a message. The order is given to destroy the pod by a nuclear device – the only way they can be sure to completely incinerate it. The base has to be evacuated immediately.

And as the base is preparing to take everything of importance with them, the planes en route to evacuate them witness a vast horde of thousands of infected racing across the desert sands straight towards them.

Part Two: False Hope

As a group, they raced to make the door for the next level before the Eaters reached them first. It was too small a space to make it an eloquent retreat, as they jostled and bounced off the walls as they raced against time – each more of a hindrance to the other than helping.

Fear is a powerful motivator; it makes the muscles work harder.

Terrance got to the section first and stood covering the stairs. The others started to pile through the thick fire door that Troy held open.

A shotgun blast deafened everyone, as Terrance opened fire as a deformed head came around the stairwell. The blast plastered brain, flesh, and bone all over the pale wall. The limp body tumbled backwards into another creature.

Bro, move it! Lindell shouted to get his brother’s attention, to inform him they were safely through.

Terrance started walking backwards as he pumped and fired again. This time he hit a naked teenage boy in the chest sending him flying backwards into another frenzied figure behind as his chest and lungs exploded.

At his side, Lindell pumped a round into a middle-aged man who only had one arm. Half the man’s face vanished in a spray of gore.

As one body fell another quickly filled the space, climbing over the previous.

The others made it into the corridor.

Above the resounding noise of the shotgun blasts, some sixth sense made Alex turnaround.

A figure was moving out from a room three doors down. A skinny naked woman, with matted blonde hair, and streaked with feces and blood stood staring, as if comprehension was sinking in. Her oversized, bloodshot eyes locked on to the group. In a blur, she rushed at them, her dirty hair trailing behind her.

Guys! Guys! Alex shouted as the woman raced down the carpet with bare feet, hardly making a sound.

However, the others were concentrating on the fight in the stairwell. They had enough problems of their own to contend with.

Alex took a few steps forward and raised the baseball bat. He tried to ignore the fear and panic that was screaming at him. His hands felt the solid, reassuring wood. He twisted his neck from side to side, imagining someone was about to toss a ball. He positioned his feet. Then as the woman was almost upon him, with her arms stretched out in anticipation of warm meat, Alex swung with
