Glen Johnson was born in Devon, England in 1973. He is the author of 55 fiction and non-fiction books. Frankie De Rossi rolled over in the small, lumpy, uncomfortable bed. The noise from the room above woke him up. There was the scraping of a wooden chair over floorboards, followed by the bass of someones radio or television.

He hums the nursery rhythm, Rock-a-bye-Baby to distract his mind.

He cracked his old eyes open and stared at the small travel clock on the tatty bedside cabinet next to an overflowing ashtray and a crumpled can of cheap 7-Eleven beer. There was half a ham and cheese sandwich that he’d saved for breakfast that was dry on the edges. There was also an unopened twin pack of cupcakes.

Scattered on the floor was what looked like bright colourful condoms for a midget – which are, in fact, balloons that he practised making balloon animals with. As he got older, and arthritis set in, he needed to practice more.

6:17 am.

For fuck’s sake!

Shouting in the hallway outside his room announced that his neighbors were fighting over the cramped bathroom again. One small toilet for eight rooms on the fourth floor of The Second Chance Halfway House, in the Meatpacking District on Manhattan Island, New York City.

Frankie worked mostly in the afternoons and evenings. Not many kids had parties first thing in the morning.

There was a loud bang on his door as a person was physically shoved against it. He could hear angry voices muffled through the flimsy door – weak enough so that management could break in if they needed to.

Rain pattered on the greasy window panes leaving streaks on the unwashed glass.

At sixty-two, there were many places he would rather be, but he had to stay in the facility for another five months before he was transitioned into his own apartment.

Not that he could afford his own place, but he would have to deal with that situation when the time arrived.

He rolled onto his back and looked at the sagging ceiling while he lit and smoked his first coffin nail of the day. He rested a chipped bright yellow mug on his chest that had a big smiley face on it and used it as an ashtray.

His left knee was aching. That meant, from years of experience that the rain was set in for the day.

He blew a plume of blue smoke towards the ceiling.

This is as good as it gets.

Shabby though it is, the simple, damp, cockroach-infested room was better than the cell he’d called home for thirty-six years, which he shared with other inmates who changed as often as the weather.
