    Note from the Author

When I think about the last year only one word comes to mind, Wow! I celebrated 10 years with my loving and supportive spouse and welcomed my 3rd child. Wow! In that same year, I went from hopes and dreams to having 3 short stories appear in Amazon’s Top 100 and 1 in the Top 10, being Long Listed in my first competition, and self-publishing across multiple websites netting thousands of downloads. Wow! It has been a big year.

As for the story in your hands, Code: Black started out as an idea of individual but interconnecting short stories. As such it was released as 4 independent short stories over the course of 2013. These 4 stories are among the most popular of the stories that I have released to date.

Each of the four stories focused on a unique type of storytelling as well as character. The characters from Code: Black will be continuing their adventure in the next book of the series.

Finally, thank you for your support and I look forward to entertaining you in 2014.

    Part 1: Blood Test

After 27 years as a hematologist, Hily Threslin thought she had seen it all. She currently volunteered for the Red Cross where she tested the blood for abnormalities. She was a well-oiled machine when it came to this; she drew a droplet, dripped it into a vial, mixed in the solution for the flavor of the test, shook, extracted one cc, applied the drop to the test paper, verified that the result was clear, and repeated the process with the next test.

Clear, Hily muttered under her breath as she slipped the test paper into the file pile and pulled out the next vial. Aside from a unique numeric identifier it was no different than the last vial. She slid out a new paper, jotted down the next code and fell right back into rhythm. She drew, dripped, mixed, shook, extracted, tested, and verified. Clear, she muttered for the 37th time today. Shifting the page to the file pile, she paused. Wait a second. That’s not right. The result was anything, but clear. It was black. Must be an error, she whispered quietly in spite of being the only one in the office. She ran the test again.

She drew, dripped, mixed, shook, extracted, and tested. Here she waited, and watched the paper as it changed color. Black? The increased focus had not changed the result. That can’t be. Black isn’t even an option, she mumbled while she powered up her unused laptop.

She ran her finger over the touch pad bringing her computer to life. She quickly entered in her volunteer ID number and password. The computer loaded the necessary programs within a few moments. Hily selected the internal search engine and entered C-13 Blood Test Black. The screen flashed twice as it loaded the search results. She scrolled to the first option and selected it. The screen flashed once more and inexplicably rebooted her laptop in the process. Screw you, IT Nazis, she cursed. This was a common curse heard around the lab anytime someone had a computer problem whether it was IT or the users fault. Now she waited as the computer powered back up.

Once the computer was powered up, she was greeted by a friendly security prompt once more. She punched in her volunteer ID number and password. The screen flashed error. She reentered the information. Error. A third attempt brought up a failed access screen. Awww, come on, she groaned, as she walked away from her station. She had to either wait 15 minutes to try again or reset her password on the main server. The desktop in the main office allowed for direct access to the main server.

It was getting late and the building was
