Polar Bear Adventures - P.A. Cybulskie

    Chapter 1

WHEN THE POLAR BEAR named Pip was old enough, he decided to join the most important swimming race in Hudson Bay, Canada. This big race was held every year but it was not for the weak and the cowardly. Only the strongest and fastest polar bears in the area were expected to join. First of all, contestants had to swim very far! Then they had to catch a fish and hold it in their mouth, while trying to swim back to shore in the shortest possible time.

Everyone wanted to win this challenging race. After all, the winner would be called a town hero whom every polar bear would respect and admire. And this was exactly what Pip wanted. Despite being smart, hardworking and quite charming, Pip did not grow up as big and as strong as other polar bears. That is why he always ended up being teased by others, including his brother and cousins.

Pip trained all year long for the race. Instead of having fun with other bears his age, he chose to spend most of his free time practicing. He swam every day and lifted weights to make himself stronger. Finally, on the day of the race, on a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon, the young polar bear found himself swimming like his whole life depended on it. Despite feeling very tired; Pip knew he had to keep moving. But as he got closer and closer to shore, the winning horn sounded. Somebody had already beaten him to the finish line!

Pip groaned in deep disappointment. When he finally reached the shore, he tried to get up and run. But the young polar bear’s tired legs just couldn’t hold him up anymore. THUD! This was the sound the frustrated bear made as he stumbled hard on the ground! When he slowly looked up, he saw his large and muscular cousins Dylan and Jessie, running past him.

Your brother Jake won the race! You really should stop racing Pip, Dylan teased as he tapped Pip’s head with his heavy paw. You’re just too slow and too weak.

There’s always next year to lose again Pip! Jessie shouted.

The two large polar bears burst out laughing at their jokes. They left Pip helpless on the ground.

Feeling very disappointed with himself, the young polar bear dragged his feet back home. His grandmother greeted him at the door.

It’s just a race Pip, Nana Madge said comfortingly.

It’s a race I should’ve already won Nana, murmured the sad polar bear.

When his parents were out working, Nana Madge was the one taking care of Pip. The old grandmother, who had kind eyes and a loving heart, understood how frustrated her grandson was.

I just want everybody to know that I can be a hero too! Pip exclaimed.

Nana Madge hugged her grandson and whispered, You don’t have to prove anything to anybody Pip. You’re already special! There are more important things than winning a race. You may not understand this now; but I’m sure someday, you will.

As he was lying in bed that night, Pip couldn’t stop thinking about his failures. Nana Madge knocked on his door and gently opened it.

Don’t stay up too late my dear, whispered his grandmother. And remember, I’m always proud of you.

    Chapter 2

DESPITE NANA MADGE’S kind words, Pip still couldn’t sleep the entire night. The next morning he walked towards the coast near their house and sat on a big icy rock for a couple of hours. Pip loved his village facing Hudson Bay. It had a beautiful landscape filled mostly with snow. For the young polar bear, who loved to wear a blue-green scarf, it was the perfect home.

As he was watching the waves roll to shore, Pip noticed a large ship from afar. He had heard stories about a ship full of grizzly bears carrying cargo to different places around the world. They said these places have tall evergreen trees instead of huge blocks of ice.

Pip had always wondered what it would be like to visit a place so different from his home. After some more thinking, the polar bear suddenly came up with a brilliant idea! He stood up feeling very excited and hopeful. Then he ran to his house, almost skipping along the way. Nana! Nana! he shouted. Nana Madge, who was surprised to hear his loud voice, asked why he was shouting. Pip started talking excitedly with his eyes shining like stars. "I know what to do Nana! Why do I need to win that useless swimming race? I will just work on the Grizzly ship and go to faraway lands where bears in our hometown have never even heard of! I will embark on great and thrilling adventures! Tackle dangerous situations!
