    Introduction

I’D LIKE TO START BY introducing myself – just in case you didn’t already see my name plastered on the cover. My name is Ken Waters, and I’m an actor and writer from New Bedford Massachusetts. You can locate me on the imdb.com website. I’ll admit it, I love that domain. In the years that I’ve been working in the entertainment business, I’ve worked on over three hundred different commercials, infomercials, short films, feature films, documentaries, student films, music videos, pilots, television shows, radio shows, and webisodes either as on-camera talent or as a crew member. I’ve also worked in just about every department.

The very first time I landed on set was when I resided in South Florida and appeared in Burt Reynolds’s 1989 B.L. Stryker television show where I played a train station vendor. I knew one of the lead actors, Alfie Wise, who just happened to be a member of the gym I worked at. I was one of the personal trainers. I still think the name is cool – Stayin’ Alive Fitness Center.

I started writing a few years after I had transplanted myself to the City of Angels. I wasn’t sure if I was even going to enjoy it or not so I purchased inexpensive screenwriting software on the Internet and penned my first screenplay. Came to find out I liked it. I like it a whole heck of a lot. I’m enjoying myself as I create this introduction.

Hollywood is really all about one thing. Who’s creating what, and it all starts with a script that someone has to pen. Without a script, there is nothing to film. Prior to purchasing the screenwriting software, I had written a one-page short story. It was a brilliant idea that had a beginning, middle, and an end all on one page just like any good story should have. I liked the idea so much I converted it into a full-length screenplay, and my first draft came in at 107 pages. I now have the Final Draft software – that’s the screenwriting software of choice that most Hollywood writers work with.

Hitting the print button then holding the hard copy in your hand is very rewarding. After I wrote my first script, multiple higher-ups in the business had said that simply penning a screenplay was an accomplishment in itself. It then occurred to me that within the Full Circle script was one heck of a great story that would make one heck of a great novel. After receiving the Power Writer software from my girlfriend for Christmas one year, I began writing my first manuscript. The story became so lengthy I decided to turn it into two books then as that lengthened I turned the content into Full Circle: An L.A. Trilogy.

Let’s talk about the Full Circle Trilogy. The journey I’m about to take you on begins nearly a quarter of a century ago in the year 1989 until year by year we arrive in the year 2015. You will meet and grow to love my main characters. Their names are Destiny Macino, Mark Katano, Julie Hendricks, and Pete Waters. Some of my other characters you might not like so much, but I’ll let you be the judge of whom you like or don’t like. Every good story needs a villain or two, but in the end, I will guarantee you this, they will all entertain you.

We will grow and become wise with some of them while others remain stuck in their old school ways. We will laugh and cry with them as they all navigate the streets of Los Angeles, and some, the business of Hollywood. We will watch them as they cross paths with a mosaic of cultures and characters – all colorful and all unique as we travel through their journey in time and learn all sorts of things about the most popular city in the world. I’m about to give you a crash course on the City of Angels otherwise known as Los Angeles World.

I’m going to bring you to the Bahamas then take you through the streets of Miami to the streets of L.A., and we’ll even visit New York and Texas. I’ll teach you about the Hollywood sign and Venice Beach. We’ll visit 1 Pico and the Santa Monica Pier. We’ll go to The Grove and learn all about Hollywood and about the business of making a film. At the end of Part I, you’ll be asking yourself, who is Mark Katano and what is he doing in Los Angeles World? That answer and much, much more will all be summed up in Full Circle, Part II – Angelic Saviors & Cold-Blooded Killers.

When you’re done reading the Full Circle Trilogy, I hope I leave you with enough knowledge about Los Angeles and Hollywood that it makes you feel like you’ve resided here your entire life. Some of the Angelenos you are about to meet will change how you look at L.A. forever.

In closing, I want to personally thank you for choosing Full Circle: An L.A. Trilogy, Part I Dead or Alive as your next novel to read. I really think you will immensely enjoy the read, and I actually hate to say this, but Full Circle: An L.A. Trilogy Part II is actually turning into something just as amazing if not more amazing than Part I.

    The Old Testament

    Proverbs – 17.18.19

    Prologue

    Los Angeles

    Sunday, September 16, 1990

IT WAS ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL Sunday afternoon in Southern California, there wasn’t a breeze in the atmosphere and the bright blue sky was filled with soft white clouds that at the moment were at a standstill as Destiny and Julie strutted through The Grove – an outdoor shopping mall that leads to the Farmers Market and considered by many Angelenos to be one of the finest places to shop in Los Angeles.

Both of Destiny’s hands were busy holding multiple shopping bags from Macy’s and Victoria’s Secret. Julie grasped her bags from the same merchants in her right hand – she needed her left hand free to hold the strawberry-flavored Charms Blow Pop she was seductively sucking on.

They strutted and pranced through the mall like they owned the world. Everyone took a good long look at these two perfect tens. Who are they? everyone thought. Where have I seen them before? That was their next contemplation. They looked and acted like movie stars.

It was around 12:30 p.m. when they swaggered by Aldo’s Trattoria – not the best time to try and find a seat in L.A. if you didn’t have a reservation. The place was jam-packed with satisfied citizens. Hungry ones were standing in a line that extended right out the front door. In the window was a big sign that read Now Open.

We have to try this place. Viv already ate here, and she said it was the best Italian food she’s eaten in a long time, Destiny said.

When you get back from this trip, we can go. Did he tell you where he’s taking you yet? Julie asked.

No, and I haven’t heard from him in two weeks.

I thought you were leaving on Thursday, Julie asked.

I’m supposed to be…all he said was it’s going to be real warm, and to make sure I packed a bathing suit. Do you want to head down to the Santa Monica Promenade with me? I still need to find a new bikini.

While we’re on the west side, I want to go down to Venice Beach and get some new sunglasses, Julie said.

What’s the big commotion? Destiny quickly asked.

    I don’t know.

In the distance and just to the south of where they were walking, a large circular mob was forming around a small group of people. The mob was getting larger by the second. They looked like a giant bait ball as they darted and danced in unison with whatever direction the circle of people in the center moved. As Destiny and Julie approached them, they immediately knew what was going on.

Look at these jackasses. Why can’t they just leave people alone? Destiny said.

They’re a bunch of tools, replied Julie.

Meet the Los Angeles paparazzi, and they had their talons into someone. As the fast walking mob moved toward them, they were able to grab a good look at whom the fuss was all about. It was Madonna surrounded by her entourage – her people were doing their best to keep the paparazzi at bay, but they still managed to snap the photographs they wanted. Our girls didn’t seem fazed about that at all. Growing up in Southern California, they were always running into a celebrity someplace, and this was L.A. This was the City of Angels.

Everyone in L.A. knows where the paparazzi hang out – if you don’t want to be bothered by them, then don’t go to where they are going to be.

"Pauli has tickets to the premiere of Pretty Woman tonight. Pete tried buying them off him, but Pauli wasn’t in the selling mood," Julie said.

Where did he get premiere tickets from?

Pete said Michael gave them to him.

How did Michael get premiere tickets? Destiny asked.

You’ll be surprised with some of the people he’s friends with, Julie said.

We have to go and see that, Destiny replied.

    I love Julia Roberts.

    I know…me too.

Every time I see her I think of your mom, Julie said.

I know…everyone says my mom looks just like her. How’s Pete doing? Destiny asked.

    Smothering me as usual.

The girls were now well into the parking lot and were walking toward a shiny yellow convertible Corvette. The top was still down. Destiny juggled the bags into one hand as she retrieved her keys from her brown leather Kooba.

When you get back from this trip, I bet you’ll be sporting a new ring, Julie merrily said.

Don’t I wish? Destiny blissfully added.

    Bahamas, September 24, 1990

It was Monday mid-afternoon and another typical day for Dillon. The date was September 24, 1990 and life for him was FOOTLOOSE & FANCY FREE. The world was his playground.

THINGS WERE GOOD. Things were real good, and life was still fun for Destiny. The sun was extremely warm, much warmer than usual for this time of the year as it shimmered and bounced off the crystal clear water near the coastline. The ocean was clean with infinite shades of blues and greens.

A super yacht was cruising at ten knots. Written on the starboard and port side of deck five in Century Gothic font with twenty-four-karat gold paint was:

    POSEIDON

    STAR ISLAND

    MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA

This yacht was named after Poseidon, the Greek ruler of the sea, and was somewhere between the tiny chains of islands known as the Bimini Islands consisting of North and South Bimini, Gun and Cat Cay. To the south was Andros Island – the largest island among the many islands that make up this particular group of islands with an area that covers 650 square miles throughout 130 miles of crystal clear sea. You could just about draw a perfect rectangle around them. They’re known to us as the Bahamas, and are located approximately fifty miles east of Miami Beach, Florida. Poseidon wasn’t headed to Andros; it was headed to the nearby Nassau Island located on the backside of Andros.

On a calm day, if you were a smuggler in a cigarette boat or a go-fast boat like a scarab and you were traveling at fifty knots, you could easily make the trip in under an hour, but when you’re cruising on a super yacht like the Poseidon you’re not in a rush. You take your time.

The cigarette boats were once used to smuggle cigarettes into Canada. The go-fast boats or scarabs quickly got labeled with the name cigarette boat. A company was soon formed and actually trademarked the name Cigarette.

This yacht, this super yacht or what they called a mega yacht, had it all. Poseidon could very comfortably sleep thirty-two guests and just as comfortably sleep a crew of up to forty in the bosom of its belly. It was custom-made by the Rodriguez Group. The company was established in 1972 and now has offices all around the world. Their head office is in Cannes. This company specializes in manufacturing custom-made mega yachts. You simply tell their design team exactly what you want, and they’ll gladly construct it for you. But it will definitely be pricey. They’re going to make sure you pay for it.

This vessel was 351 feet 10 inches long with a whopping 72.9 foot beam, giving it a massive drag. The width of a boat or ship is called the beam, which is always measured from the starboard side to the port side at the waterline of the stern – bow being the front of the ship and stern being the rear. The draft or depth of this ship was a staggering 21.9 feet, which added to the drag being caused by the massive beam. The wider a boat or ship and the deeper the draft will cause the boat or ship to drag more. The more drag the slower the ship is able to travel.

Right and left are not used when on a boat or ship. They’re replaced with the nautical terms starboard and port. When facing the bow or the front of the boat or ship, the right is called starboard and the left side is called port. Starboard is a combination of two old English words: steor meaning steer and bord meaning the side of a vessel. The rudder was originally built on the right-hand side of a boat or ship. The rudder is what steers the vessel. The name steorbord was used and later the term starboard was coined. The opposite of starboard was larboard – the loading side of the vessel, but sailors quickly confused the two words. Port was adopted by Britain’s Royal Navy around 1840 because cargo was almost always loaded from port onto the left-hand side of the vessel.

Poseidon obviously wasn’t built for speed. It was built for complete luxury and utter comfort with its seven decks, five above water with another two below the waterline. One of its hottest features was the ship-to-shore Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger helicopter that could transport six guests at a time. The price tag on this bird was 1.2 million dollars. It sat on the seventh and top deck and came complete with its own pilot. Other than the captain, the pilot had the plushest job on the ship. All he was responsible for was flying the helicopter. He didn’t even have to maintain it – the ship’s engineers handled that. Toward the bow of this deck sat six aquamarine, gold-and-black Suzuki WaveRunners, side by side. The fleet looked hot lined up. Those colors just happen to be the same colors for the flag of the Bahamas. Between them and the Bell B3 Jet Ranger was a fully loaded, 32-foot Boston Whaler. It had a center console with triple 225-horsepower Mercury outboard engines, 3.0 liters each. To imagine the power of triple 3.0 liter engines, a 1990 Ford Mustang GT has 5.0 liters and can do a quarter of a mile in 10.790 seconds. A liter is a metric measurement of three. The liter is used to measure an engine’s size in cubic inches, for example, a Mustang GT 5.0’s engine is a 302-cubic-inch motor.

The engines alone on this boat would set you back $20,000 a pop. Fully loaded it came in just under $115,000 and was mostly used as the ship-to-shore shuttle. Just in case you didn’t enjoy flying, the triple 225-horsepower Mercury outboard engines consumed the stern of this Boston Whaler. With no writing room on the stern, on the starboard and port side of this boat read:

    POSEIDON JR.

    STAR ISLAND

    MIAMI BEACH, FLORIDA

This name was also written in the same Century Gothic font and with the same twenty-four-karat gold paint to mimic the father ship that it rode piggyback on. A large boom with an electrical hoist was used to lower the WaveRunners and the Boston Whaler into the ocean when someone wanted to play with one of them.

Another spectacular feature was the elevator that was located in the middle of the yacht. It went from the engine room up to the top deck. If you didn’t want to take the elevator, there were winding staircases scattered throughout the vessel taking you from one level to the next.

From the bottom up, the ship had his enormous engine room – the place was operating-room clean. Three of the six deckhands spent ninety percent of their time polishing the chrome and brass, and when that was done, they would meet the remaining three deckhands’ top side who were performing the same duties to the rest of the ship. Poseidon sparkled inside and out.

The chief engineer kept Poseidon’s propulsion system in pristine condition. Under him, were second and third engineers. His eight two-thousand-horsepower MTU engines and Poseidon’s Caterpillar generators purred like a kitten drinking warm milk.

MTU in German stands for Motoren-und-Turbinen-Union. In English, this translates to Motor (engine) and Turbine Union. MTU Aero Engines are Germany’s leading engine manufacturers. Poseidon was a self-contained city on the sea. Its gas tank held 185,000 gallons of fuel, giving it worldwide capability. With a maximum speed of 17 knots or 19.56325065 mph, Poseidon could cruise to Beijing and back without refueling.

Above the engine room were the crew cabins and laundry room. This deck had a game room and another galley just for the crew. The recreation room was for the guests, and the crew could use the room when there weren’t any passengers being pampered on the ship. This room came complete with two pool tables, foosball, ping-pong, air hockey, and several electronic dart boards. They had all the popular arcade games: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, Galaga, and Centipede. They even had some of the trendy pinball machines: Eight Ball Deluxe, Indiana Jones, and Superman. Everyone seemed to like the one called Pool Sharks the best. On this deck, the crew had plenty of room and everything they needed.

From the waterline up were the sleeping quarters for the guests. Larger staterooms were located on the third deck along with the two master suites. The fourth deck was consumed by more staterooms. The bigger of the two master suites was on the third deck located at the stern of the yacht. This was the owner’s suite with two huge sliding glass doors that opened onto another sundeck. This was also the fishing and diving deck and came complete with a dozen cozy, teak lounge chairs with thick pearl-white cushions. The fishing platform on this deck had two fishing chairs and was set up strictly for big-game sportfishing.

At the end of the stern on either side of the two fishing chairs were seven steps that led to the four-foot-wide dive platform that sat inches above the waterline. The platform was covered with more teak and was an extension of the semi-wide open stern. Two of the stewards were also professional fishermen and dive masters. They knew these waters like the back of their hands. Between the two of them, they knew exactly where to fish and had spent years mapping out the locations of the best reefs to dive, snorkel, and cast a line.

The rooms on Poseidon made a room at the Ritz Carlton look like a stay at a Motel 6. The artwork, antiques, and furnishings alone on this mega yacht were worth millions.

On deck five, there was the master dining room adjacent to Poseidon After-Hours – the ship’s rocking nightclub. The club came complete with trendy disco lights and, of course, the mirrored disco ball. The nightclub was decorated in 1970s style with the classic lighted dance floor. The chief steward was also a master mixologist and worked behind a bar that carried some of the most exotic, super premium libations in the world.

To name a few, Poseidon stocked Remy Martin’s Louis XIII’s Black Pearl going for about ten Gs a bottle, Macallan’s 1926 Fine & Rare Collection at $38,000 a bottle, Wray and Nephew Jamaican Rum fetching about $50,638 a bottle and said to be one of six unopened bottles in the world, and let’s not forget the DIVA Premium Vodka for the special lady in your life at $1,060,000 a bottle. Is it the vodka that’s so expensive or the center of the bottle that’s filled with precious diamonds, emeralds, and pearls? The wine and champagne list was just as exotic, and you wouldn’t find a bottle of well liquor on the ship.

Ironically enough, the gym was also located on this deck and came complete with free weights including a complete set of dumbbells from 2.5 to 100 pounds that sat next to the universal machine. The universal machine alone could easily tone and shape every muscle on the human body. Poseidon carried just about every type of cardiovascular equipment on the market. The cardio equipment was all Precor and came quadrupled: four stair masters, four treadmills, four elliptical cross-trainers, four recumbent cycles, four upright cycles, and four rowing machines. This gym came with a sauna, steam room, and spa that was located next to the salon. What gym would be complete without a personal trainer, and what spa would be complete without a masseuse? Let’s not forget about the hairstylist at the salon. There were only three female stewards on the Poseidon, and they worked in the salon, spa, and gym.

Deck six consisted of the enormous sundeck complete with a custom-made Jacuzzi that seated as many as sixteen guests. This deck also had two long oak tables that also sat sixteen people each with inviting chairs set up for outdoor dining. A custom-made Char-Broil BBQ pit was next to the entrance to the five-star galley that came with a professional chef and his three sous chefs.

On the third day of the trip while Destiny was sunbathing, she could smell something remarkable. I’ve never smelt anything like this before, Destiny had thought.

Dillon smelled it too and had told her the chef was smoking a 150-pound wild boar for dinner. That turned out to be the second best meal she was served on Poseidon.

This entire crew was handpicked by the captain for their special and unique skills. The chain of command started with the captain then trickled down to his first then second mate. This was a $280 million custom-made mega yacht. In 1990, they didn’t get any bigger or plusher than this one. On this planet, Poseidon was the largest of its kind. Every detail on this mega yacht was carefully orchestrated and designed for perfection.

As Poseidon approached the coastline, Destiny was sunning herself on the smaller sundeck located on deck three outside of the owner’s suite. She was getting more tanned by the second and looked beautiful in her skintight, coral-pink bikini that looked like it had been painted on. Her large, perky breasts seemed like they would break free from the fabric at any second.

This was the bathing suit she had recently purchased with Julie on the Third Street Promenade. There was a mom and pop store called Skin that carried a huge variety of skimpy, little bikinis. She was sold as soon as she saw the name of the color. Coral pink.

Other boats were heading back and forth from the islands that were now very much visible in the distance – mostly sailboats and small fishing boats with a few jet skiers tooling around. Destiny took in the exotic scenery like it was eye candy.

The oversized mega yacht cut through the water like a knife slicing through warm butter. It was graceful, but the water was even more graceful. It was one of those days that made you feel like you were actually inside. Unbelievably, not a breeze filled the air except for the breeze caused by the moving yacht. It was a warm breeze. The ocean was as flat as a sheet of glass. A perfect day to be cruising on the largest custom-made private ship in the world.

Poseidon slowly approached the waters near the Nassau marina at his now modest 8 knots or 9.21 mph. A knot is equivalent to 1.15077945 mph. The crew had been instructed to drop anchor several 100 yards off the coast of Nassau near the entrance of a large cove that wasn’t far from the Nassau marina. They looked sharp and clean in their whites as they hustled about trying to look busy but really didn’t have much to
