    Chapter 1

I will be waiting here at precisely 7:30, Mrs. Krantz told the two girls sternly. No excuses for being late, or being at the wrong door.

Okay, Mom. Emily rolled her eyes as she hopped out of the car behind her best friend, Katherine. We’ll be right here. She was so ready to be treated as an adult. Not as a child.

Two hours at the mall to shop! shop! shop! til they dropped! Or until they ran out of money, whichever came first. Unfortunately, it would probably be running out of money. But until then - shop! shop! shop!

Thanks for the drive, Mrs. Kay, Katherine hollered into the open window.

Mrs. Krantz had to flinch. You’re welcome, little Kay. Remember, girls, you’re only thirteen years old, and when I say 7:30, I mean 7:30. Or this will not only be your first time alone at the mall, it will be your last.

    A car honked behind them.

Okay, Mom, you’re holding up the traffic, Emily said, grabbing Katherine’s arm. Jeez, we’re not babies, she muttered under her breath.

Did you say something? Mrs. Krantz asked sweetly. Too sweetly.

No, Mom. Sorry. We’ll be here at 7:30. I promise.

The car honked again. Mrs. Krantz glanced into the rearview mirror. All right, then. Be good and have fun.

The minute the white Chevrolet minivan turned the corner, the two girls jumped up and down, squealing and shrieking, oblivious to the stares of the passersby they startled.

I thought she’d never let us leave! Emily said, hauling the glass doors open. Two hours is going to fly by, too quick as it is!

Where do we want to go first? Katherine asked, smoothing her wind-swept long, straw-colored hair away from her face.

Emily wished she had silky blonde hair like her best friend, Katherine, and the porcelain doll face to go with it. But no, Emily was stuck with mousy brown curly hair, and to make matters worse, she had freckles sprinkled across her nose.

Make-up or clothes? Katherine wanted to know. Melanie bought the cutest shirt at Garage last week. She said it was on sale so cheap she absolutely had to buy it. They were practically giving it away.

Melanie was Katherine’s older sister. At seventeen and with a driver’s license, she was occasionally required to drive the two friends to various locations, such as dance class, basketball practice, the movies, or other activities when neither Emily’s nor Katherine’s parents could do it.

Okay, Emily decided. Let’s go to Garage.

As they walked down the wide corridor to the other end of the mall, they passed the food court and heard their names being called.

    Hey, Kathy! Emily!

Katherine gritted her teeth. Oooooooh, I hate being called Kathy! she muttered. And he so knows it!

Loser! she hollered back at the culprit.

Shhh! Emily whispered. She knew she was going to blush. She could imagine who was sitting at the table.

Look, Em, it’s Blane, Katherine said.

Emily moaned to herself. I’m not blind! she hissed.

So do you want to sit with them for a minute? Katherine asked. I’m such a good friend that I’ll put up with that jerk Aiden. Boy, he really gets on my nerves.

Emily was left with no choice but to follow as Katherine strutted over to their table.

Emily’s face was on fire! If only she could control her blushing. But no, her face was as red as a beet, she just knew it. Blane would never think she was pretty if she turned red every time she saw him.

What are you guys doing here? Katherine asked as she stood beside the table. Here Emily, you sit for a minute.

Of course the only chair was right between Blane and Roger.

Blane, Roger and Aiden were three close friends who were seldom seen apart.
