    CHAPTER 1: Historical Background

This book will summarize the games and scores of the eleven cricket world cups that have been held between 1975 and 2015.

Cricket is one of the oldest and most continuously played games on earth today. It was first played in England as early as the 1500s. Its popularity increased so much that by 1697 a Great Cricket Match was held in Sussex, England. During the next 100 years the sport gained many supporters and underwent a number of changes. One of the most significant was the introduction of bowling the ball instead of merely rolling it as had previously been done. By 1800 cricket was considered to be the national sport of England.

As the British Empire expanded to various colonies overseas, cricket was introduced to many countries around the world. In 1844 the first international cricket match was held, between the United States and Canada.
