Jerseline Granviel was born in Curacao, a tiny island in the Caribbean. Through her growing up years and beyond, her charismatic nature and love for people made her a great friend as well as an easy target for hurt and even abuse. But with God’s help, she survived—and eventually flourished. Introduction

Two friends were discussing the proper response Christians should have toward sin and the weaknesses found in unbelievers and Christians.

One said, The Bible teaches we should show compassion to those who have fallen into sin.

The other one shook her head and cautioned, I am afraid we have become too compassionate. The line between showing compassion and condoning sin is very thin.

You can never become too compassionate! The first one insisted. The Scripture tells us God is love and His compassions fail not. They last forever and are new every morning. A Christian who is living by the Spirit doesn’t need to be afraid of crossing the line, no matter how thin it is!

Which opinion is biblically correct? What is true Christlike compassion? Why is compassion so important for the Christian? Does compassion have validity in the daily life of Christian women and their relationships? What difference would it make in this world if people were more compassionate? Can we be too compassionate and enable those bound by sin? What do we have to fear if we show compassion?

Esther, My Compassionate Friend

Esther Petrona was a wife, my best friend, and a fellow missionary. In November of 1995, after losing her courageous two-year battle with liver and pancreatic cancer, she went home to be with the Lord. Those of us who loved Esther realized she was the embodiment of a relational person. Wherever she went, Esther loved people and offered peace and hope to hurting souls. Esther was not very talkative, but she always encouraged others with her sweet spirit. Esther was also quick to share her heart and be vulnerable when she needed to. Another Christlike character trait Esther possessed was her even-keeled temperament. I never heard her quarrel. She forgave cruel people who intentionally set out to hurt her. Even when she was dying, she always had an inspiring word for her family, her friends, and everyone she came in contact with.

Some Christians feel we shouldn’t pattern our lives after another person, but the apostle Paul wrote these words to the Corinthians:

Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ. (1 Corinthians 11:1 NIV)

I want to follow Esther’s godly example because she reflected Jesus to everyone she met. I learned so many lessons from watching her. I was humbled and convicted whenever I said a harsh word to my husband or children. Sometimes
