- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was fantastic! I absolutely LOVED everything about this book, that Janice Thompson penned. She is an amazingly seasoned author, and she knows how to take characters and blend them perfectly with her plots and turn out a novel that will keep her readers captured-hook line and sinker. She is one of my all time favorite authors, and she can make me laugh, cry and everything in between with her books! In Stars Collide, the characters are hilariously perfect for their rolls. Kat Jennings is the heroine and what a heroine she is! She is ultimately dealing with issues of losing her mother at a young age, her father walking out on her and never coming back, and being raised by her grandmother, a past Hollywood legend who is suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's. Grandma Lenora is a sweet character, who keeps the laughs rolling with her comments and thoughts from the 50s, when she was the rising Hollywood star. And, Scott Murphy....oh lala! THAT is one Hollywood actor that is G-E-N-U-I-N-E! He's everything a man should be: witty, charming, thoughtful and most importantly, a man of faith. He helped Kat on many occasions understand that God is the ULTIMATE script writer and that it is up to Him to set the next scene.I don't want to give too much away! I think that if you love laughs, you love romance, you love a tad bit of mystery, then you should check out this first book, Stars Collide, in Thompson's newest series, Backstage Pass. It's 5 star worthy, high recommendations and laugh out loud entertainment! I am currently awaiting the release of book 2, which can't come soon enough for me. Well done, Janice!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This story was a delight to read, as are all of Janice's books. It was mild in the sense of reflecting the author's tender romantic style, but it was also a fun read, too. I loved the grandma. The author made a sad situation funny by putting a spin on it that makes the reader smile at the eccentricities and put them into perspective. The quotes from movies were fun and an entertaining aspect of the story as well. As is typical for Ms. Thompson, she interjects a powerful human need into every story. In this novel it was Kat's longing for a relationship with her father. While the emotional damage caused by his abandonment when she was only seven was heartbreaking to process with her, it was realistically portrayed. So was her adjusting to the idea that her grandmother's mind was slipping away. Stars Collide was a well rounded story in all aspects and I never got bored with the story or started skimming through the pages.

The story sounded like a nice, delightful read but I really had a hard time getting into it for some reason. The characters didn’t really have much depth to them in my opinion. Yes, we know they are “believers” and are morally good people, but you really don’t get inside their heads. All of a sudden the two main characters realize they are attracted to each other—maybe even in love. Then within weeks, they are discussing the rest of their lives and marriage. I know the premise of the story is that their characters are getting married but it seems to come out of the blue very quickly for the actual characters. I did, however, like the grandmother character. My own mom is mild-to-moderate Alzheimers and is quite forgetful but I’ve only had one experience where she thought we were sisters. Patience is a learned virtue when it comes to dementia and I understand Kat’s handling of her grandmother. As a matter of fact, there was one line in the book that hit home---“When did it become the job of the kids to protect the parents & grandparents?” That is what I think all the time! Stars Collide is a cute read with chapter titles that include names of sitcoms---Who’s the Boss?, Whose Line is it Anyway?, and Step by Step. A nice touch of Hollywood and trivia is intertwined in the book and it gives a small peek into “behind the scenes” of making a television show. And there’s humorous moments that made me have a quiet chuckle but it didn’t seem to be one of Ms Thompson’s best efforts (sorry!! I really enjoy her other books!). “Available January 2011 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group.”I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher (thanks Donna) in exchange for an honest review.
