Matt Chatelain

Born in Ottawa, fifty-two years ago, I have been the owner of a used bookstore I opened in Ontario, since 1990. I have been writing since I was ten. Beginning with poetry, I quickly moved on to short stories and non-fiction pieces. I stayed in that format for many years, eventually self-publishing a franchise manual, as well as a variety of booklets.Having semi-retired from the bookstore, I embarked on the project of writing my first serious novel, which I expanded to a four-book series after discovering an incredible mystery hidden within a French author's books. My interests are eclectic. I like Quantum Physics,Cosmology, history, archaeology, science in general, mechanics, free power, recycling and re-use. I'm a good handyman and can usually fix just about anything. I'm good with computers. I love movies, both good and bad, preferring action and war movies. I can draw and paint fairly well but am so obsessed with perspective and light that I cannot think of much else. I am too detail-oriented.I have been around books all my life. In my mid-forties, I decided to focus on writing as my future job. It took me five years to learn the trade. Now I know how fast I can write and how to develop my story and characters. I always wage an internal war to decide if my next story is going to be a mild mystery or a big stake epic. So far the big stakes are winning

    An Interview with the Author

    Excerpt from 'The Vostok Juncture'

    Introduction

When I originally wrote 'The Greyman', it was much longer. Paul Sirenne, having become the new Greyman, was tasked with rebuilding the new world, following the story laid out by the original dreamer. Sirenne was now a full-fledged immortal, overseeing the creation of the universe, our solar system, bringing life to Earth, and humanity to apes.

After much reflection, it occurred to me that this section of the Greyman did not fit the pace of the rest and was not necessary to reveal the Greyman story, so I removed the section from the book. It gave the 'Greyman' a much better pace and the ending was not affected.

However, I realised the section provided some interesting background to what Sirenne went through as the Greyman. I decided to publish the section as a separate book, available for those who are interested in finding out more about the Sirenne universe.

The first chapter, and the last, are both found in 'The Greyman'. The events in 'The Lost Years' occur between the two.

    After the Original Dream

    Welcome back, pal.

The sound attracted my attention and my mind hesitantly lurched into gear.

    What? O'Flanahan? That's you isn't it?

You bet, buddy. It's you and me again, sitting in our comfy chairs in the good old caves of Etretat. Remember?

Yes... I answered faintly. Focusing in on O'Flanahan's familiar face, I repeated with more force: Yes! How long was I dreaming the Original Dream?

    Not long.

    It felt like an eternity.

Time does not have much meaning in those types of dreams.

    No, I guess not.

So, tell me, what did you think of the Original Dream?

I'm still blown away by it. I haven't processed what it means yet... At first, I didn't even understand what was going on. The thoughts in the dreams were happening with such incredible slowness. It felt like I had to prod them at first. I wasn't even sure if the thoughts were mine or not. Eventually, after what felt like millions of years, I heard the first steady stream of thoughts from the original dreamer. I had to translate what he was thinking into concepts I could relate to...

But you eventually got it, right?

Yes, I got it. I saw the origin of the Other. I saw the growth of the structure of the universe, the creation of matter and the making of life. I saw it go from nothing to something.

    Pretty good dream, then?

Ha-ha... Yes... A pretty good dream, O'Flanahan... but now, I guess I have to put that in terms of where I am now.

You're right on track, as usual.

So then, am I to take it that this original dream has led to everything which surrounds us now? The history of mankind, the One Book, is the Original Dreamer's final system, the end result of the original dream, to bring about the creation of new dreamers.

I'm not sure if I would put it that way. Perhaps it's one system, instead of the final system.

    What do you mean?

Don't forget what the Original Dreamer did with life. He tried all sorts of approaches, everywhere across the universe. This dream, the Earth story, is one small piece of that.

Wait a minute... Are you saying that there are other dreams out there?

As many dreams as there are worlds capable of sustaining life. When they perfected their 'bubble nucleus'...

    That's DNA, isn't it?

    Of course.

I saw something like DNA when I put the One Book together.

That's right. The One Book contains the reality of DNA, the perfect machine for life.

There's one thing I saw in the dream that I'm not sure I understood at all.

    What's that?

In the entire dream, there was only a single formula. 2=0. It did not seem to make sense.

That formula is the basis of everything, starting with the creation of the Other. Before that split from the One, there was nothing, or zero. By splitting apart, the One and the Other brought everything into existence. Two came from zero...

Aahh, I get it...if the two recombine, zero returns.

Yes. The universe ends... but it's so much more than that. The Original Dreamer built that concept into everything. The duality which surrounds us...

    The opposites.

Yes, the opposites. It is our true challenge: to surmount what seems like one thing in order to understand that it is really another thing entirely. All opposites have two sides, balancing to nothing. They are not separate as we see them but inextricably linked together. When we truly learn this, we understand what the universe is about.

So when you and your Other meet up, this universe will end.

Well... not exactly... admitted a sheepish-looking O'Flanahan. ... Sorry, but you seem to have forgotten that you took this thing over. This is your dream now, not mine.

I thought I would take over when you left...

I'm afraid it's too late for that. I'm already gone.

    This was too much.

What do you mean already gone? You're not gone, you're right here in front of me.

I know but I'm just... a reflection of me... in your dream. I'm simply here to help you understand what is happening to you.

If that's true, when did I take the dream over?

Try figuring that out on your own, O'Flanahan replied with a good-natured smirk. Oh, come on, Sirenne, give it a go.

    Fine.

I thought back, rolling through every single one of my memories. The process sifted out a single clue.

My dreams... I exclaimed with excitement. All along, I have had dreams presaging what was going to happen next, dreams I was never able to explain.

Very good. They were your way to wake yourself up to what you already knew deep inside...

... One dream was different than the rest. The one where I joined with Raymonde.

    Bingo!

    The revelation floored me.

...That... that means, since that dream, I've been in charge? But I didn't know... How could I?

O'Flanahan reached over and patted my knee.

There, there, Sirenne, It's all right... Of course you knew, you knew all along, like we all do, deep, deep down. It just took you a while to tell yourself about it.

That means Raymonde truly is my Other... I added.

Yes!... Finally...O'Flanahan exclaimed with a big grin. Took you long enough.

Everything I had thought I had known instantly realigned itself following this new perspective. It explained everything. Our strong, unbreakable inner connection, our magnetic attraction, our mental unity following the process of our joining. Looking at it now, I could not escape seeing the similarities between that and the Original Dream.

It's all the same, I gasped.

Yes... All the same, no matter the scale you choose.

    So what now, O'Flanahan?

Well, I guess it's time to close off this part of the book. I need to get to Mary.

    Mary? You mean your Other?

Yes, my Other. I've missed her so much... It's time to join up with her again... and not for just one lousy night every twenty years.

What will happen to you after that?

    I'm not sure.

    "Aren't
