Chapter 1

Amy speedily turned the key to the front door where she lived. She was exhausted and deflated. All she wanted to do now was drink hot chocolate from a big mug, put her feet up on the sofa and drown out her sorrows while watching one of her feel-good films that fooled her into thinking there were wonderful, handsome caring men out there in the world and happily-ever-afters were possible. She knew she was being the stereotypical weak, sad female feeling sorry for herself—all based on some fantasy conjured up by society and the media, as she had read somewhere in a female magazine—but she didn’t care. She was alone, and she wanted to indulge in a little self-pity.

She had just gotten back from another disastrous date; the guy she had met had been obnoxious, arrogant and rude! He had spent the whole date talking about himself, his job in sales which earned him a huge bonus, and his prized car which he had described as if he was talking about a beloved pet. Amy remembered how her date had mentioned about cleaning and polishing his vehicle every three days and giving it a name. Not to mention his excessive chatter about how he loved his football team, that Amy had found out early on in their one-sided discussion was currently top of the league. Amy had not been able to get many words in during the entire conversation. Even so, when the date was over, he’d still had the nerve to ask if she wanted to come back to his flat to continue to get to know each other better!

Amy had looked at her date with disgust at that point, declining with just a few words. Her date had certainly then gotten the message with her response that she was a long way from being interested in him. She was sure that she would never hear back from him again; that had been her only consolation.

She tried to remain optimistic as she now rested on the sofa, willing herself to think that something wonderful and unexpected was just around the corner for her, and someone very special was waiting to claim her. After all, everyone had to get their lucky break some time, she reasoned.

‘Amy, you’re back early,’ came a deep voice from behind her.

Amy turned to see Jason, her flatmate. He had just gotten out of the shower and was wearing only a towel around his waist. His large toned muscles were all on display for Amy to see; he looked amazing, to Amy’s eyes. She had to mentally shake herself to stop staring. Even though she was quite aware that Jason was a fine physical specimen of a man, she knew he was also a notorious womaniser and charmer, and was probably destined to remain a playboy bachelor for the rest of his days. So, although she appreciated his attractiveness from time to time, she never overstepped the mark and allowed herself to daydream about impossible things happening between them.

Not to mention the fact that they were very old and close friends. They had stuck a friendship up in their teens, brought together by Jason stepping in to protect her from the playground bullies. She had been a shy and what some might have described as a strange kid back in those days. Her head was up in the clouds most days, daydreaming, or down in some book and again daydreaming of a different world, where she was one of the popular kids at school. She had been easy prey, as an awkward teen, to the school bullies, but Jason had one day stepped in to intervene and prevented her from being tormented. For that, Amy had remained eternally grateful, right up to the present day. She had not expected Jason, the school hunk, to ever notice her, let alone help her out. After that, she had pretty much hero worshipped him at school, following him everywhere, helping him with his homework assignments, and taking an interest in anything he did or was into, so she could talk to him about anything—be it films, music or sport—whenever he gave her the honour of spending time and listening to her. He had really made her school life both bearable and memorable!

But now they had grown into adults, and surprisingly enough, they had kept in touch after school. Amy had gone on to help run and work in her family cake shop and Jason had attended university before setting up his own technology business. The business was a success and had gone from strength to strength over the years, making Jason a very wealthy man, with an office full of workers to look after. Therefore, when he had travelled to visit his family a few years back for the holidays, where he used to live and go to school, he had stopped to talk to Amy at the cake shop, and had practically begged her to move to London and help him manage his office. She was someone whom he could trust and depend on. He had appealed to her for her assistance. He had also made the generous offer to her of a room in his penthouse flat; he was happy to have her as a permanent guest.

Amy had jumped at the chance to move. She had known back then that there was something good waiting around the corner for her, and that Jason asking her to be his office manager was a sign that her life was about to take off. Not to mention, she got to help Jason and return the favour for once, after all he had done for her throughout the years.

‘Yes, I am back early. The date didn’t go as I planned,’ Amy moaned to Jason, not hiding her disappointment.

‘What was wrong with this one?’ he enquired.

‘Where do you want me to start?’

‘That bad?’

Amy nodded.

‘Don’t know why you put so much effort into questing for the impossible. News flash: Didn’t they tell you there is no such thing as Mr Perfect?’

‘Thanks, Jason. You’re being really helpful,’ Amy said sarcastically. ‘It’s easy for you to talk; your standards are lower than mine,’ she teased. ‘You’re not looking for Mrs Right. For you, it’s more of a case of Mrs Right Now.’

‘Yes, you’ve got that correct. Seize every day as if it’s your last, meet new people, enjoy their company and when you get bored,
