    Introduction

    Los Angeles, the glittering City of Angels. Full of beautiful natural resources, amazing museums, and the sparkle of Hollywood. Also choked by smog and traffic, and so expensive you might go bankrupt before you even leave the baggage claim at LAX.  My husband and I love the city's quirky charms and are lucky to have friends and family in Southern California, so we try to visit every few years or so. We've brought our young kids along, as well as elderly parents and teenage nieces and nephews.  Each trip is an adventure in an amazing, dynamic metropolis where the more things change, the more they really, really change.

    For instance, the Farmers Market on Fairfax. While some of us were growing up, it was a ramshackle, eccentric, eclectic collection of stalls and booths that offered reliable and colorful dining for the lunchtime or weekend crowds. Our cousin Alice, who worked in the adjacent complex known as CBS Television City, would walk over on her lunch break for Greek pastries or Chinese food.  My grandmother would trek in once a month from Sherman Oaks with a shopping list in tow. Tourists flocked in, but the area remained a little dusty, a little seedy.
