Chapter 12: Zachary Taylor
Presidential term: One year and four months, since he died in office. He served March 5, 1849 to July 9, 1950. Since Taylor's inauguration fell on a Sunday, he chose to follow the example of James Monroe in 1821 and hold the ceremony on Monday, the 5th. Unlike later presidents where this occurred, he did not take the oath in a private ceremony on Sunday, and thus left the country without a president for one day.
Birthplace: Orange County, Virginia, not far from James Madison's home.
Birth date: Nov. 24, 1784.
Primary State of residence:
Height: 5 feet 8 inches.
Weight: 200 pounds.
Shoe size: Unknown.
Eye color: Hazel.
Personality: Rather obstinate and opinionated, and not always willing to listen to the advice of those with greater knowledge.
Health problems: He experienced yellow fever in 1809 while in the army near New Orleans. After he recovered and returned to his duties in an army camp in Virginia, he developed dysentery. In 1810 he contracted malaria, which flared up several more times over the years. He experienced a severe fever in 1849 as president, but recovered. In 1850 he developed severe abdominal difficulties, starting on July 4th after attending various public functions. He died from the symptoms 5 days later. Due
