Personality: A dedicated public servant who realized too late that he was not overly suited to the presidency. Nonetheless he was a capable administrator who knew how to get others to work.
Health problems: He experienced food poisoning in 1862, while a union officer in the civil war. Toward the end of the war he suffered from scarlet fever. He developed dermatitis during the war as well, and had to wear gloves ever after. He suffered a near breakdown in 1867 from overwork. He did not cope well with stress, which was intensified by his wife's death while he was in the White House. He died of pneumonia.
