Empath (Flawed #1): Flawed Series, #1
Author

Becca J. Campbell

An avid lover of stories that tiptoe the line between fantasy and reality (even when they plunge off one side or the other), Becca J. Campbell looks for new angles on bridging the gap between the two. She holds a special place in her heart for any story that involves superpowers or time travel. Her passion is defying the limits of her own creativity. Becca’s journey into writing began as many of her other creative endeavors do – by daring herself to try something new. The question “what if I wrote a novel?” and some hastily scribbled notes on a church handout were the inspirations that jump-started her first book. Since then, she has written half a dozen additional novels and several shorter works. As the wife of a musician and mother of three young boys, Becca’s life is never dull. Whether it is writing, painting or knitting, she enjoys making stuff that wasn’t there before.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from LOP (Lovers of the Paranormal)

Jade is a new college student and like most, she's concerned about her grades and friends. However Jade has a secret, she's an empath whose emotions are directed by those around her. Seeking an escape from her first day, she runs into Logan, one of her professors. Logan's calmness soothes Jade and he helps her with her work. Making new friends, she starts to become happier in her life. However there is a serial killer at large and he won't stop until Jade is his.

I enjoyed Empath, it was very well written and I loved reading about Jade's abilities. I thought the descriptions of Jade's powers were quite intense and I enjoyed the characterization of her friends. The parts of the book that dealt with the killer were extremely well written and there was a decent racheting up of tension throughout the book.

The only issue I had with the book revolved about the romance. I wasn't quite sold on the main pairing, mainly because there didn't seem to be enough time for them to get to know each other. It felt as though the characters were together, because that's what the author had planned, I felt that there should have been more interaction between the two.

But that aside, I really enjoyed the book and will definitely check out the second in the series.

Empath (Flawed, #1) by Becca J. Campbell

Jade, a college student is not an ordinary young lady. She has a gift of empathy, at times she feels it is a curse. She can pick up on other peoples feelings, so much that she is not certain of her own feelings. She often wonders if they are (the emotions) of those around her.

Now in college she makes some new friends, possibly even a young man in her life. Then Ethan, a psychopath appears. He is obsessed with beautiful Jade, and soon she is in danger. Jade must learn to use her emphatic powers to save herself.

I liked the originality of the story. Using real emotions and fantasy, a fantastic mix to make a fascinating read. Jade is very likable, living a sheltered (home schooled life), we watch her adjust to college life and interacting with her peers. We meet her new friends, see a potential love interest for her as well.

There was a nice mix of drama and suspense to keep me captivated. The impending danger adds spice to the story. Overall I enjoyed Empath and feel that Young Adult, Adults and lovers of fantasy will enjoy this great read.

While the total antithesis of the kind of careless, heartless individual we all love to hate, being an empath for Jade is actually a curse; a curse from which her parents did everything they could to prevent her from suffering. Empaths are those individuals who are strong receivers of the emotions and feelings everyone around them has, which can definitely become overwhelming. Image if you will the kind of feelings and emotions you get when someone dear to you has died. Now multiple that by a hundred; no make it by a thousand and you’ll begin to realize why she considers it to be actually a curse.Luckily for Jade her parents made sure to keep her as isolated as possible growing up as a child; but at the same time they unfortunately they didn’t do anything in preparing her for the time she might leave the nest to go to college. There, she now needs to learn how to set up some sort of protective barrier from the emotions and feeling those around have. Instead of merely feeling other people’s emotions these emotions are ruling her as she becomes their emotions.Once Jade started going to class the multitude of emotions from her classmates: nervousness, excitement, rage, fear and frustration made her relatively helpless since she hadn’t developed any sort of barrier to shield herself. Luckily she was able to gather some classmates to help her gather the knowledge she needed to begin to protect herself. All is comparatively fine, fine that is until a psychopath, named Ethan, develops a fascination for Jade and the feeling of fear she’s constantly emitting because of the lack of control over that emotion. You wind up with a showdown, either Ethan will possess Jade or Jade must use the empathic curse she was born with to overcome him. This book is full of emotions and is a captivating, fast paced read due to the practically flawless writing of the author for which I given the author 5 STARS.

Book Info: Genre: Paranormal/Urban Fantasy ThrillerReading Level: New AdultRecommended for: Fans of thrillers involving paranormal elementsBook Available: August 20, 2013Trigger Warnings: murder, violence (esp. toward women), warning for those who are afraid of snakes and/or spidersAnimal Abuse: a bear in killed (it was attacking), snakes and spiders are used to assault women and could potentially be harmed in that processMy Thoughts: I will admit to being a fan of this author already, so was very excited when she contacted me to edit this book. I was quite impressed by her abilities, as this manuscript was fairly clean. Oh, there was plenty for me to do, but compared to some I've seen? Impressive. This is the first time I've received a manuscript that contained the term jack-o'-lantern in which it was correctly spelled, so I was quite impressed.Ethan was a chilling character. That sort of cold cruelty freezes my blood. There was a quote I wanted to use here, but it would make a spoiler, so I'll leave it out. But believe me, he was a highly believable, and highly scary, character.I couldn't help but like Cam—his sunny nature and natural charm is very appealing. His brother Josh, while quiet, seems to contain a certain complexity. I would have liked to have learned more about him. I also really liked Chloe's character, her strength and feistiness. As far as Jade's other romantic interest, I of course liked Logan. It's so interesting how all these people consider themselves unique—and each is, of course—but there are so many people that have these different unique characteristics. I like how the author wove all their strengths together in the end to solve the problem.I believe this is scheduled to be the first book in a new series. The second book is to be titled Outsider. I'm not sure what characters will continue. Jade and Logan's story seems to be complete, but there is a lot to be learned still about Josh, so I'm hoping he's up next. I am quite looking forward to wherever she takes this. It was a very enjoyable book.Disclosure: I edited this book for the author. I do not receive any remuneration based on sales. All opinions are my own.Synopsis: Supernatural empathy isn’t a gift, it’s a curse.
