The forest was calm. Gwen liked it there, away from the noise and turmoil in her city. There was talk of war, as always, her father's fault. He'd been imposing himself on the neighbouring town, as if the title of Duke somehow extended across the border.

Here in the green woods, the only things which spoke were the streams and brooks, the trees and the creatures which moved in them.

She knew that it held dangers too, lurking inside its beauty. Her heart leapt when she thought of such things, partly in fear but also with excitement. What would be over the next verge, masked by the ancient oaks?

Knowing that danger could emerge in an eye-blink, she counted her steps from the edge of the trail. If any kind of savage beast were to rush at her, she could count the steps back to safety.

Ninety-nine steps in. The furthest ever, she thought. A noise stopped her in her tracks.

    Ninety-eight. Ninety-seven.

The noise was a soft bleating, like that of a sheep or goat. Maybe it was trapped or hurt.

    Ninety-eight.

Gwen listened hard, trying to work out where the sound was coming from. What if some dread monster was luring her in?

The bleating stopped. Her heart thundered in her chest. One hundred. And one. And eleven. She lost count as she ran on, trying to find the source of the noise.

She reached a stream. Across from her was a tiny sheep, its leg trapped in a pile of rocks by the water's edge. Getting to it would mean crossing over.

The stream was moving fast, but seemed quite shallow. No danger to her, but the hem of her long dress would be sodden. Her father would notice when she returned, and he would no doubt be furious.

Looking around, she decided to slip out of it. The stream was narrow – she could run across, free the beast and run
