    That Life - Theresa DeFeyter

In the year of 2020 the world has undergone great change. Those in power attempted to disarm the people world wide for their own gain. Some people accepted what our leaders told us, exchanging the ability to protect ourselves for the illusion of security. The demand for surrender resulted in rebellion, chaos and complete destruction of society. Alike groups of people banded together for protection creating independent communities where the strongest enforced their will

Some gatherings were civilized while others were violent predators. Many communities found themselves dependant on Clubs and Gangs for protection from violent criminals who preyed on anyone who dare oppose them. Many of these marauding bands roamed the open spaces. Long distant travel became extremely dangerous and was only attempted by those who could defend themselves from large numbers of attackers. Where once Motorcycle Gangs and clubs who were once considered outlaws, became the new leaders. More and more embraced The Life.

During this time Lycan shifters living among the world’s population came to light. In a desperate attempt to save themselves a number of wealthy collaborations used this information without proper forethought to create a generation of humans who had some of the Lycans abilities.

These abilities included increased strengths and the ability to shift to wolf form at will. They used material from born Lycans to create a drug that altered the genetics of unborn fetuses. This drug was secretly distributive within prenatal vitamins. While 1-10 male children born during this time developed these abilities the drug increased the number of males over females. The drugs creators didn’t consider the repercussions caused by the drastic change to the population. The end result was males out numbering females five to one.

True Lycans preformed a Bond through the exchange of blood during intercourse. This linked the mated pair in a way that was unbreakable. A Human mate after being bonded to a full Lycan acquired all the Lycans abilities and linked their life span to that of their mates. They became Lycan in every sense of the word and any offspring born to the bonded couple were also Lycan with full abilities. The Man-made Lycan males were not able to form the mating bond with a human. Nor did their offspring receive their enhanced abilities.

With females in short supply they became valuable property of their male counterparts and lost all ability to make their own decisions. A woman was considered the property of her father, husband or other male relative’s affiliation with a club, gang or community. Upon a man’s death the fate of any females in his possession came under the discretion of his affiliation. If the man had no affiliation the women who looked to him for protection became fair game to be forcefully taken by whoever could claim them. The affiliate groups decided the fate of all the females under their protection.

Many communities became self supportive. Trading with other communities was not an easy task. Many affiliated groups were wary of stranger and either didn’t allow trespasser or demanded a fee to cross their territory without repercussions. Others traveled the abandon Highway destroying anything in their path for entertainment and personal gain

Some communities faired better than others they found ways to create their own electricity, internet, and cell service, whatever they could manage. All were responsible for their own protection and enforcement of their own laws. The ability to protect themselves was now a major concern.

    Chapter 1

    Sophie

Sophia Roberts stood outside the fence surrounding the Wolf Pack MC's club house. She silently debated how to get inside the compound without putting herself at greater risk.

Sophie‘s dark blue eyes were narrowed as she studied the massive structure. Years ago the building itself had been a very pricey resort. The club had built the large fence topped with razor wire around much of the property. The surrounding area was heavily wooded.

Sophia was in her early fifties but looked much younger. She was of small build with long dark blonde hair which was currently braided and tucked inside her leather jacket. She wore leather chaps and a skull cap in an attempt to hide the fact she was a woman. She had no visible club patch deeming an affiliation. Underneath she wore simple jeans with a tank top. She reached out barely touching the fence and then shaking her head she decided climbing the fence was not a possibility.

She took a deep breath ducking her head in an attempt to hide her features. Well here goes nothing. She started walking towards the front gate. Maybe they will think I am a boy, at least until I get inside. She stopped at the gate, glancing around for a bell or something catching movement to her left. A rough looking kid wearing jeans and a black leather vest with the MC’s patch of a particularly angry looking wolf head moved towards her along the fence.

Once the kid got a look at her, his bored expression changed to interest. He arrogantly let his eyes wander up and down her frame. His face split into a cocky grin. A female without an escort who was not pack property was unusual. Most men didn’t chance letting their women out where they could be easily taken. The kid smirked at her Well, Well, Well what do we have here? She avoided eye contact, keeping her voice low she said I need to see Jackson Davis or Ethan West.....I have a message from my ole man. She waved the envelope she carried in front of her.

I can take it, Jackson and Ethan are busy. He replied gruffly.

Nah, I can wait if you don’t mind, I need a reply She hesitated before adding, But can I wait inside the fence, it’s probably not safe for me to stand out here." She glanced around nervously hoping no one else was around.

The kid pulled a phone out of his pocket and pressed a couple of buttons. Hey Boss, there’s a lady out here asking for you or Ethan. He paused, What’s your name?

    Sophia Roberts" she supplied softly.

The kid didn’t act as if the name meant anything to him. He waited as if listening to the voice on the other end before clicking off the phone. He typed in a code that made the heavy gate slide back. Sophie waited for him to step back before she step inside.

Wait here someone is on the way to escort you inside. He raised his eyebrows in a question, but Sophie ignored it and gave no response. Within a few minutes a door opened and a man step out, he waved impatiently for her to come towards him. She recognized him as Ethan West, The Wolf Packs VP. She had only seen him once a couple of years ago, but he wasn’t a man you would easily forget. He stood well over six foot with black hair that almost reached his shoulders and a build that most women would die for. He had several tattoos showing at the edge of his bright white t-shirt sleeve. He wore black jeans that hung on his hips but fit nicely every where else and heavy black leather motorcycle boots. The skull cap he wore was of the American flag...the one before the war. He was wearing a vest, which she was sure had the MC’s patch on it.

Sophie slowly walked towards the large biker; she was a bit nervous, considering the size of the man. She was so tired of being afraid. That was the real reason she was here. Ethan barely glanced at her before pulling the heavy door open and waving for her to enter. She hesitated before getting too close to him; he glanced at her with a pointed look that said are you coming, but didn’t speak to her. She wondered if he knew her. When she had seen him it had been from a distance, he was talking to her husband. Danny hadn’t wanted the other club to see her until he was sure of them. So he had her hide nearby while he met with them.

I have a message from my husband; can we go somewhere more private to talk? She raised her eyebrows in question

Yup, Jackson’s waiting for you in his office He moved behind her, placing his hand on her back to guide her to the office. Gotta say I’m real curious to hear what you have to say or what message you have, since we haven’t heard from a Roberts in around two years. She gave no indication she had even heard his comment, she would have to tell them everything soon enough.

They entered through a large reception area and then turned right, into a hallway, they passed several doors before Ethan stopped and opened another door. He waited for her to step thru the doorway his dark eyes watched her movements. He entered behind her and closed the door. The room was large and was obviously an office.

Jackson Davis, President of the Wolf Pack MC sat behind a large desk. She couldn’t tell how tall he was, but he was a big man. She guessed he was mid to late thirties. He had brown hair streaked with blonde pulled back in a pony tail. He wore jeans and a t-shirt and tattoos were visible on his arms and neck. He was leaned back in his chair with his feet clad in heavy leather boots resting on the desk surface. His hooded eyes looked her over before indicating the chair near his desk.

I would prefer to stand, at least until I know what kind of reception I am getting. She kept her face blank. This was going to be difficult at best. She stepped to one side so she could keep Ethan in her sights also. She tried to give the impression she was relaxed, but she was really concerned and some instinct told her they knew it.

Jackson leaned forward, and she stepped back quickly, giving away her nervousness. rookie mistake. Ethan backed towards the door, leaning his weight against it. She noted both men acted if they expected her to bolt, which made her want to all the more. The fact any escape was effectively blocked made her edgy.
