Love's Other Plan - KD Bryan

    Prologue

    Nine Months Earlier

The wedding was beautiful! The bride was glowing and the groom looked like the happiest man in the world. To a romantic heart, it was the perfect night! Melanie Dupree looked around the ballroom and sighed. Carli and Reid’s wedding had been absolutely perfect, and the reception was now in full swing.

Melanie remembered the night of Carli’s birthday when Reid had proposed at Rico’s club. A few people had known what was going to happen, but to most of the party guests it was a total surprise. Melanie had been one of the few in on the secret. She knew she’d never forget the look on her friend’s face as Carli held out her hand for the ring and said yes.

The couple hadn’t wanted a lengthy engagement, and with everyone’s help, the wedding had been planned, and was happening, a mere four months later. A December wedding was taking place, and it had turned out wonderfully. Carli’s best friend Jillian, a fashion designer, had taken care of the dresses, including the bride’s gown. Carli had looked radiant coming down the aisle of St. Mary’s Cathedral on her dad’s arm. Her white strapless gown with a lace overlay had looked beautiful and elegant. She’d chosen to wear her hair in a low chignon for the day in order to accommodate her abuela’s special gift. Carli’s grandmother Rosita had taken her own wedding veil and had it remade into an elbow length style. It was held in place with a small diamond clip to secure it in the bride’s hair, and Carli was wearing it today attached to the top of her bun, leaving her face bare.

Melanie looked down at her own dress and marveled again at how beautiful it was. Jillian had designed a simple empire waist floor length gown for everyone. The top was sleeveless with a vee neckline. Carli’s sister had served as her Matron of Honor and Isa had worn a gown in soft coral. Jillian’s gown was a few shades lighter and Melanie’s gown was a soft blush. The groom had worn a dark gray tuxedo, and the groomsmen had worn a lighter shade of gray.

Melanie was seated at the head table with the rest of the wedding party, and everyone watched as the bride and groom took the floor for their first dance as a married couple. Melanie heard the strains of the Rascal Flatts song God Bless the Broken Road and thought what a beautiful choice for her two friends on this day. While the newlyweds danced, Melanie took the opportunity to steal a glance toward the tables set up throughout the ballroom. Her gaze immediately fell on a table near the edge of the dance floor where Carli’s older brother, Rico Santos, was sitting with several other men. Melanie knew some were cousins, but a few friends had also joined them.

Melanie watched Rico as he laughed and talked with the others. Rico had served as an usher in the wedding, and he looked so handsome in a gray tux that matched the groomsmen. He and another of Reid’s friends had both been ushers, but they’d chosen to not sit at the head table. Melanie continued to watch as Rico and Pablo Rivera, and his partner Raoul, laughed at something one of the cousins had said.

As the first dance ended, the father and bride dance was announced next. Melanie watched, as in a sweet gesture, Reid walked over to Carli’s mom, Sylvia, and insisted she dance with him. Melanie could tell by the look on Carli’s face that her groom had just earned some major brownie points!

When the dance ended Melanie heard the sound man, DC Scott, announce that the floor was open to everyone. Melanie knew it was only a matter of time before the dance floor would fill up. If there was one thing the Santos family liked to do, it was dance! Melanie also knew that the one exception was Rico. He hadn’t been on the dance floor since his late wife’s death almost four years ago. They’d been competition dance partners in their earlier years, as well as Carli and their other siblings. After Camila’s death Rico had lost all interest in dancing and unfortunately a lot of other things.

Melanie hadn’t lived in St. Louis at the time of Camila’s death; however, she’d learned from Carli that it had been a very dark and sad time in their family. Not only had Cam died, but she was pregnant with a little boy at the time. They’d lost the baby, too, from complications in the pregnancy. Carli had told Melanie that Rico blamed himself for his wife and son not making it. Rico still believed that if he hadn’t left her that night to return to the club he might’ve been able to do something to prevent her death. As a nurse, Carli had explained to Melanie that the likelihood of that being accurate was slim to none. Camila had lost so much blood so quickly that the doctors had been doubtful she would’ve survived regardless.

Later in the evening, Melanie made a quick trip to the restroom for a much needed break. She’d been dancing all evening and had drunk two glasses of champagne. Actually, she was feeling quite happy and relaxed at the moment! When she entered the ballroom again her gaze zeroed in on Rico’s table, and she noted that he was still sitting and talking with friends and family. Melanie would question later whether it was the champagne she’d drunk that had made her approach Rico. Melanie had cared for Rico for quite some time, but she also knew he might never return her feelings. Melanie knew it was next to impossible to compete with the memory of his late wife whom he’d loved completely.

Striding toward the table, Melanie squared her shoulders and kept moving. Her stomach was dancing with butterflies, and she asked herself at least three times was she crazy. She also asked herself what in the world was she doing. Since she didn’t get a definite answer to either question, she just kept plowing ahead. When Melanie reached the table all the men politely stood and said hello. Taking a deep breath Melanie looked at Rico and said, Dance with me.

If you are not too long, I will wait for you all my life.

    -Oscar Wilde

    Chapter One

Melanie Dupree arrived at work on Monday full of energy and enthusiasm because she loved her job! She still thanked her lucky stars every day that she’d landed her current position at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center. The interview process had been tedious, and the human resources director had told her they were looking for just the right person to take the position they had open. The lucky candidate would work as a clinical Social Worker in both the Trauma & Emergency Department as well as the Intensive Care Unit.

The job title was technically a Family Resource Specialist, and Melanie’s background in social work had made her an excellent candidate for the position. After being offered the job Melanie had immediately accepted without any reservations. She, and her boyfriend at the time had been in St. Louis for approximately six months by then, and so far she hadn’t had any luck in her job search. However, if she were honest, she knew she was being a little hard on herself since she’d only been job searching for three of those months. The other three had been spent getting hers and Garrison’s apartment fixed up and livable. His hours as a computer programmer had been long and tedious, so the settling of their place had essentially fallen to her.

Melanie sometimes thought about that period in her life and wondered how things had gone so wrong. She’d thought they were happy together. They’d dated for two years back in Alabama after meeting at college and taken an immediate liking to one another. The friend that introduced them had gushed they would be absolutely perfect for one another, and seemingly they had been, until they weren’t any longer. About a year into their move to St. Louis Melanie started noticing things were changing. Garrison was working more and more hours all the time and coming home later every night. He’d fall into bed exhausted and rarely ever turned to her to say good-night, much less anything else.

Melanie had finally come to grips with the fact that something was very wrong in their relationship. As it turned out, it even had a name: Suzette. It suddenly became crystal clear why Garrison didn’t have any energy left over for her. Suzette was evidently draining it all! When Melanie finally confronted him one night, he’d broken down and confessed that he’d met someone else at work, and evidently they’d been seeing each other for several months. He’d been trying to come to terms with telling Melanie but simply didn’t want to hurt her. After three years together he knew she’d assumed their future was set just as he’d thought it was too. That is until Suzette had entered the picture.

Melanie recalled those painful days and realized she should’ve trusted her instincts sooner that something was wrong. After Garrison’s big confession, he’d packed a bag with enough clothing to get him through until he could come back and move his other things. Evidently Suzette had a two bedroom townhouse that she was dying to share with him. Melanie knew he wasn’t going to be the renter of bedroom number two! No, he was moving in with her lock, stock and barrel. Ironically it wasn’t wasted on Melanie that she’d been the one who’d given up everything to follow him to St. Louis in the first place. She’d resigned her job with the department of Social Services, given up her apartment, told her shocked family good-bye and hit the road north.

In the days following Garrison’s big move Melanie had sat and cried, had thrown a brush across the bedroom, and then cried some more. She’d finally pulled herself up by the boot straps, as Big Jack used to say, and realized she had some big decisions to make. First and foremost, was whether she was staying in St. Louis or returning to Alabama. Her family was all there; her two brothers, grandparents and yes, her parents. Melanie missed them terribly, but she also loved her job. She’d grown to like St. Louis after living here for almost a year. She’d made friends at work that she’d also grown fond of. Looking back, she realized she’d spent far more time with them than she had Garrison the last several months before he moved out.

Her final decision had been to remain in St. Louis for a few months longer. Melanie had known it wasn’t best to make any big decisions while she was still angry and hurt at Garrison’s betrayal. Now, two years later, Melanie was still in St. Louis. Much to her family’s amazement, she showed no signs yet of wanting to return to her southern roots. Of course, her family didn’t realize that she’d met Rico Santos a few months after Garrison defected. Rico was the older brother of one of her closest friends at work. Carli had shared his whole heartbreaking story with Melanie, and being the kind-hearted soul she was it had only endeared him to her more.

Rico had suffered the tragic loss of his wife and the son she was carrying when her pregnancy had ended fatally one night. Carli had explained the whole story to Melanie and had been in tears at the retelling even after all that time. Carli and her whole family had obviously been extremely close to Camila and had mourned her death deeply. Carli had described her older brother as a lost soul after the death of his beautiful wife and unborn son. He’d never been quite the same since, and the family worried that he ever would be again.

Now Melanie was pining after a man that was so mired down in grief and guilt she wondered if he’d ever surface above it. She’d had feelings for him for so long and she wondered how he possibly hadn’t figured it out. There were times when she thought she might as well have a neon sign above her head that said, Rico, I care about you! blinking in red letters. If he did realize it, he kept the information to himself, that’s for sure. Melanie had experienced a couple of moments with Rico when she’d thought maybe he suspected she had feelings for him. Regardless, he’d never taken it any further.

One of those times had been several months ago when Carli had been shot. She’d been returning a young mother and her baby back to a women’s shelter when the girl’s boyfriend had gained access. The young man had been violently angry and under the influence of drugs when he’d attempted to take his and the girl’s baby from her. He’d beaten Martina with his fists and then pulled a gun, threatening to shoot her if she didn’t give him their baby daughter. Carli had bravely tried to protect little Angelina and been shot in the process.

It had been a horrible time that day as the whole family, as well as a horde of friends and co-workers, waited for Carli to undergo emergency surgery. Melanie had stayed and waited with the family generally assuming the duty of care taker for everyone. She’d remained with them throughout the whole ordeal, bringing food and coffee, fielding telephone calls from concerned friends and just being there for them. She and Rico had shared a moment while cleaning up after everyone had eaten sandwiches she’d bought. He’d thanked her for helping and being there for his family and had even given her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

Melanie realized his actions had most likely just stemmed from gratitude because she knew he genuinely appreciated everything she’d done. She’d assured him that she hadn’t done anything special. She’d just been there for one of her closest friends in a time of need, as well as for her family. The Santos family had taken Melanie in and made her feel nothing but welcome since her move to the city.

Melanie’s southern upbringing had taught her that nothing should come before helping those in need during a time of crisis. Her maternal grandmother, Mama Nelda, had instilled that into her head since she was a little girl growing up. Of course Melanie’s own mother, Catherine, didn’t usually adhere to those qualities, and it was much to the disappointment of Melanie’s grandmother. Mama Nelda never discussed her disappointment in her daughter’s choices, but she never expressed how happy she was with them either!

Melanie stowed her purse in her office on the Trauma Unit, and then ventured out and looked around for a familiar face. She knew that her friend Ty Anderson was supposed to be working today, and she wondered where the flamboyant drama boy was hiding. Turning around, she spotted Carli Brandt coming down the hall. Melanie met up with her at the desk and reached out to hug her.

Sugar, I can’t get over how cute you look pregnant! Even in scrubs you’re absolutely gorgeous. Pregnancy definitely agrees with you my friend. I bet that gorgeous husband of yours thinks so too!

Carli gave Melanie a little pout. I really don’t know how cute I am, but my gorgeous husband is certainly enjoying the, and I quote, sex crazed hormones well enough! Mel, I’m a nurse, and I knew all this stuff, but until it’s you it just doesn’t seem real. The insomnia, the forgetfulness, the sex hormones, all of it! Of course, I’ve convinced myself it’s even more so since I’m carrying twins!

Melanie reached out and patted Carli’s arm. She knew her friend had been a tad bit overwhelmed since learning she and Reid were having twins. However, she knew if anyone could handle it, Carli could. Melanie also knew that Reid would be there to support her one-hundred percent. Talk about a man who’d done a complete about face! Reid Brandt had for sure. He’d gone from an eligible Los Angeles bachelor running from any kind of relationship to a married man with a wife he adored and now twin baby girls on the way. Melanie knew stranger things had happened, but Reid’s transformation was right up there with miracle material!

Carli, honey, you’re doing great! If anyone can handle all these changes, it’s you. And that reminds me, have you talked to Sylvia about any of this? Your mother did have twins herself you know. Maybe she can shed some insight for you.

Carli snorted out an unladylike laugh. Melanie, you know my mother as well as anyone. Dr. Syl is so busy herding poor Papa through retirement it’s a wonder he doesn’t apply for asylum back in Cuba! Seriously though, we have talked. She assures me all this is perfectly normal. But, don’t get her started on the increased libido issue! Oh heaven help me! That was a conversation for the memory books! I was screaming TMI, TMI and covering my ears before I could get her to be quiet. There’s only so much you want to know about your own parents’ sex life!

Melanie laughed so loudly she finally looked around the unit to see if she’d disturbed anyone. Yes, she did know Carli’s mother and loved her dearly. As Big Jack would say she was one of a kind for sure. Melanie’s granddad usually had a word, or several, to describe everyone and some were better than others.

Well, I’m sure it was interesting to say the least. However, I’m glad I wasn’t a fly on the wall for that one either!

Carli reached down and absently rubbed her growing belly. Looking at Melanie she said, Poor Rico was there and definitely not a fly on the wall for part of it. He walked into the family room just as she was expounding on the intensity of the female orgasm during pregnancy. I thought he was going to break his neck trying to get out of the room! Then Mom started shouting, ‘Rico, darling, don’t run off. This is all perfectly natural and nothing to be ashamed of discussing!’ I thought I would roll off the sofa laughing.

Wide eyed, Melanie looked at Carli and had to ask. What did he say then?

Carli waved her hand in front of her face. Oh, I believe it was something to the effect of ‘Por favor! My ears are bleeding Mama! I’ll be in the kitchen with abuela Rosita when you’re finished!’ Of course I was shouting something to the effect of ‘Rico, you cowardly chicken, get back in here!’ I never saw him again that day.

Oh my goodness, it sounds like you all did have a rather lively conversation!

Carli looked at her with one raised eyebrow. Melanie, you know my family right? The Santos family has lively conversations down to an art form. My poor husband is still shell shocked after spending the day with them. I think he’s just thankful that a part of our conversations are always in Spanish, and he can’t keep up. He’s adopted the philosophy that if anyone has anything to say to him, they’ll let him know!

Melanie laughed and said, Poor Reid! I know the whole family thing is a little overwhelming for him still yet. I’m sure it’s been an adjustment in some ways.

Yes, it has, replied Carli. But, he’s really done well considering where he was just a short time ago.

Melanie shook her head in agreement. Yes, you’re right. I really need to go. I have to get up to the ICU to check on a patient and his family that came in last night. There was a three car pile-up on the interstate, and he was critically injured. I think there are some financial issues with the family, and I need to assess their situation and see what needs to be done. I’ll be back later to see if you have time for lunch.

Okay, that sounds good. I’m sure these darling girls of mine will be starving by then. Of course, I’m blaming my increased appetite on them! Poor little things, their own mother is making them take the fall for her already!

Melanie made it to the Intensive Care Unit and spent over two hours working with the family of the vehicle accident patient. The family certainly did have some financial issues! Unfortunately, an insurance policy with less than stellar coverage was one of them. She assured them she would look into the situation and try to find out if the driver at fault had insurance. Hopefully that was the case and his coverage would help offset what the patient’s insurance lacked.

Melanie arrived back in the Emergency Department fairly close to lunch time. She looked around and wondered if Carli was tied up or would be free to join her. She hoped the latter was the case. She’d really missed spending time with her friend since her recent marriage. Melanie was so incredibly happy for her though; she’d never begrudge one minute of her time lost with Carli.

About that time Melanie caught sight of the one person who could make her heart rate double in no time flat. Rico Santos was coming down the hall toward her. Surprised and a little worried, she stepped out from the desk to meet him.

Rico! Hey, what brings you here? Is everything okay? Melanie could hear the concern in her own voice, but didn’t stop to temper it. She was concerned!

Rico Santos was only too aware of the petite and beautiful blonde heading his way. Melanie was like a beam of sunshine no matter where she went. She usually always had a smile on her face, and people were just naturally drawn in by her friendly personality. However, he could see that today she didn’t have a smile. Her expression was one of concern, and he quickly spoke to alleviate it.

Hey Melanie, nothing’s wrong. Well, let me rephrase that since I am in the Emergency Department of a hospital. One of my cooks cut his hand open on an extremely sharp chef’s knife, and I brought him in for stitches. They’re taking care of it right now, and then his wife is picking him up from here. I don’t think he’s going to feel like working the rest of the day.

With a concerned look Melanie agreed. No, I’m sure you’re right. He’ll probably want nothing more than a pain reliever and elevation.

Looking around, Rico said, Have you seen my little sister today? I think she’s supposed to be working. I thought I’d see if she wants to get lunch.

Melanie couldn’t hide the smile that appeared on her face. Yes, as a matter of fact she is here. We were visiting earlier.

Rico smiled in return and gave her a curious look. From the look on your face do I even want to know what your visit was about?

Melanie gave a quick laugh and confessed. No, you probably don’t want to know! She was telling me about a conversation she had with Sylvia recently. I believe you walked into the room and then nearly killed yourself getting back out again!

Melanie knew immediately when Rico recalled the day she was referring to. With a groan he dropped his head and shook it. Rico finally raised his head and said, Oh please, don’t remind me! My mother was talking about…well, never mind what she was talking about! And my sister didn’t help matters when she called me a cowardly chicken and told me to get back in there.

Melanie was laughing outright at this point but managed to say, I can only imagine the scene! Sylvia was evidently wound up from Carli’s version of the story.

Rico laughed and said, The women in my family have no shame. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is off limits for them to discuss! The only thing that could’ve possibly made it worse was if Isa had been there!

Carli was making her way down the hall when she heard laughter coming from the area of the desk. Looking ahead she momentarily stopped in her tracks. Rico was standing in the hall talking to Melanie and they were laughing! Carli felt the tears prick her eyes. Stupid hormones! She was so happy to see and hear her brother actually laughing it made her emotional. Of course, she’d gotten emotional at a dog food commercial one night this week too, and Reid had laughed at her.

Reaching the pair, Carli looked from one to the other. Well hello there you two. What’s so funny? Maybe you need to let me in on the joke.

Rico looked up and blinked like he was surprised to see his sister standing there. Rico smiled and then leaned over and gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Hey sweetheart, how are you? Are my nieces behaving themselves in there?

Rubbing her belly, Carli laughed. Yes, well no, it just depends. I’m only twenty-two weeks and they’re already pretty active. More active than I ever thought they’d be at this point. Maybe it’s because there’s two in there.

Melanie couldn’t resist. Well, maybe you need to take your brother with you and visit with Syl again. I’m sure she’d answer any questions you might have about it, among other things!

Carli burst out laughing and looking at Rico exclaimed, Hey! That sounds like a fun idea! Let’s call her and see if she’s home this afternoon. We can go over right after I get off work!

Rico gave both women a glaring look. He knew when he was being hung out to dry, and this was it. Ladies, I would rather trade places with my cook right now than do that! He’s in there getting eight stitches put in his hand. Does that tell you anything?

Still laughing Carli said, You are such a wiener! Suck it up brother, and be a man. Come with me to listen to our Mama expound on those pregnant girl things she likes to talk about!

Rico held both hands up in defense. No thank you! However, I will take you to lunch and that will have to be good enough. Do you have time to go?

Carli replied, Well thanks, and yes I do. Actually, Melanie and I were going to get lunch together today, so she can just join us too.

Before anyone could say more, Melanie jumped back into the conversation. Oh, no Carli, that’s fine. Don’t worry about me. We can have lunch together another day. You go on with Rico and enjoy the time with your brother.

Rico looked at Melanie and said, Join us, please? I know it’s not the best place in town to offer, but I know the cafeteria is probably better for you all.

A little breathless, Melanie looked at him and thought you could take me to the Sahara Desert for lunch and it would be wonderful. Of course, she couldn’t say that out loud, so she settled for, Okay, if you’re sure. I don’t want to impose or anything.

Rico laughed and said, Well, I do have an ulterior motive. Not only do I get to take two beautiful women to lunch, but I’m counting on you to save me from my sister sharing any further details of her recent visit with mom!

Two beautiful women! Melanie was speechless. She simply stood there like a ninny and unable to say a word. Looking helplessly at Carli she finally managed, Okay, I think I can do that. Let me just tell the secretary we’re both going off unit for a bit. I’ll be right back.

Turning away, Melanie tried to control her clamoring heartbeat. He thought she was beautiful! He’d told her she looked beautiful before when she and the others had been dressed up at the club, but he’d never said anything that remotely personal to her before.

Melanie told the secretary she and Carli would both be gone for a while for lunch. As she reached the other two they were in a conversation about the club and restaurant when she walked up. Rico looked over at her and smiled as she approached and Melanie felt her heart rate shoot up again.

Rico was battling with his own conflicting thoughts at the moment. He might’ve just told Melanie he thought she was beautiful. At least that’s how he thought it had come out. He was so out of practice when it came to complimenting a woman, he wasn’t really sure. As they walked toward the elevator bank he tried to concentrate on the two women’s conversation. He was having a hard time keeping tuned in though. He wasn’t sure how he felt about the fact he’d just told a woman something like that. Rico’s head, and heart, were so programmed to not think that way he wasn’t sure what to make of it.

Rico realized he couldn’t do anything about it now, so he decided to push his troubled thoughts aside while they had lunch. He’d just have to be extra cautious about what he said around Melanie, or any other woman for that matter. He definitely didn’t want to give them the wrong idea. And what exactly would the wrong idea be? That was the question he was asking himself lately. It was something he struggled with, and had been struggling with for a while now. Rico had told himself for a very long time that he’d never get involved with anyone else. He told himself that no one could ever take Camila’s place in his heart. He’d lived by that mantra for so long he didn’t know what else to believe. Her memory was what had kept him going from day to day. He’d clung to it like a lifeline that he couldn’t relinquish.

Rico knew deep down that his thinking wasn’t the healthiest. His mother had certainly talked with him about that! He knew she’d been in mom mode when they’d had the conversation, but he also knew that Dr. Sylvia Barrett, M.D., in the field of psychiatry had been fighting to get out too. Rico knew his mother meant well, and he truly understood that her love and concern for him was the motivating factor behind her trying to help. Still, after four years Rico felt the loss of his wife was something he had to deal with in his own way and time. It seemed like no one understood that. He certainly didn’t know how to explain it, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to.

Rico suddenly realized he and his lunch companions had already arrived at the cafeteria. He’d been so lost in thought he hadn’t realized the elevator had stopped. Carli walked out first and then Melanie followed. Without thinking, Rico reached out and put his hand at the small of Melanie’s back as they exited the car. He felt her body quiver at his touch and instantly drew his hand back. What was wrong with him today?

Melanie shivered when she felt Rico’s hand at her back. She would’ve loved to imagine he’d made the sweet gesture because he had feelings for her, but she wasn’t kidding herself. He was simply a courteous guy with good manners when it came to how he treated women. She’d seen that quality in him too many times in the past. He was genuinely a nice person, and his actions reflected that.

After the trio got their food, they were able to snag a table away from the growing crowd of diners. As she munched on her salad Melanie stole glances at Rico from under her lashes. He and Carli were talking about a lot of things and really nothing. It was that conversation style that siblings shared among themselves, that ability to talk about whatever came to mind next. Melanie recognized it because she did the same thing with her two brothers, Landry and Will. How she missed them sometimes! Will was two years older and Landry was three years younger than her. At twenty-eight, Melanie was the only girl and obviously in the middle. She’d sometimes found it a little daunting but had usually held her own pretty well with the two of them.

What do you think Melanie? asked Carli.

Blinking in surprise, Melanie looked at her friend and immediately apologized. I’m so sorry honey, what were you asking me? I was thinking about my brothers and just got lost in thought.

Waving her fork in the air Carli said, Oh, don’t worry about it. I just asked if you’re planning to join us at the club on Saturday night. Isa is adamant that we all be there. This week is mom and dad’s anniversary, and we’re celebrating. They’ve been married thirty-four years! I’ve only been married just a little over eight months, so thirty-four years is hard to imagine.

Rico sat with a thoughtful look on his face. He and Cam had been married for only a few years when she’d died. Of course, they’d been together as a couple for years prior to that, so the time just sort of rolled together. Things like anniversaries and new babies being born were hard for him to think about sometimes. However, he always made the effort for his family because he never wanted to shut them out. He had enough sense to realize that life went on, or at least for other people it did.

Melanie was giving him a strange look, and he attempted a smile. Rico looked at her and said, Yes, you should definitely come to the anniversary celebration at the club. I know mom and dad would want you there. You’ve been around us enough to know they think of you as family.

Stammering in surprise, Melanie managed to get out, Thank you. I feel the same about them. They’ve been so good to me, including me in your family gatherings and everything. You all have been my family away from mine. After a pause she said, Yes, I’ll plan to be there for sure.

Rico bestowed another smile upon her, and for a moment she almost wished he’d stop. Her heart rate was fluctuating so much she was afraid it would get completely out of rhythm if this kept up!

Rico looked at Melanie again and said, Good. We’ll expect to see you there. Then he opened his mouth and blew all her positive thoughts out of the water. Oh, and feel free to bring a date if you want. There’s plenty of space for one more.

Great, bring a date thought Melanie. Sighing, she simply chose to ignore his last statement. Melanie could feel Carli’s eyes on her, but she couldn’t bring herself to look at her friend. She didn’t want to see the pity and concern she knew she’d find there. Carli knew how she felt about Rico, and she’d known for quite some time. Melanie had finally confided in her one night after a couple of glasses of wine at dinner, and Carli had been more than supportive. However, in all honesty, she’d warned Melanie that she couldn’t make any promises where Rico was concerned. There was no one who wanted to see him come out of his shell any more than his family. They knew he needed to start the process of living again without Camila. Nevertheless, until he knew it the thoughts and concerns of others meant nothing.

As they finished lunch, Melanie tried to put a smile back on her face and act as if nothing was wrong. Today, however, it just wasn’t working for her. Her usual upbeat and sunny personality had taken a nosedive with the words bring a date. She didn’t want to bring a date darn it! She hadn’t been on a date with anyone in almost a year and a half. Sure, men had asked her out, but she simply couldn’t imagine herself with any of them. And certainly not in a sexual situation, God forbid. The thought of just getting through an evening of small talk and getting to know one another made her want to crawl in a hole somewhere. No, the only date she wanted was with a gorgeous man who had a crippled heart. The man she wanted was still grieving the pain of his loss. Consequently, what did that say about her? Melanie wasn’t really sure anymore.

If we wait until we’re ready we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.

    Chapter Two

Rico left the hospital after depositing his lunch companions back in the emergency department. As he walked out to his SUV, he couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something had gone wrong during their lunch conversation. Things had been going well with the three of them as they talked and laughed while they ate. Then it seemed as if Melanie had just shut down on them and grown very quiet. She was one of those people who was so outgoing and friendly all the time, the sudden change in her disposition certainly hadn’t gone unnoticed.

Rico replayed their conversation in his mind and he couldn’t pinpoint what might’ve been said to cause the sudden change. Not only had Melanie grown quiet at the table, she’d barely said a word in the elevator. When they’d reached the unit she quickly thanked him again for lunch and then practically ran off citing she had a family to contact. Rico had turned to Carli with a questioning look on his face, but he’d gotten nothing from his sister. She’d merely given him a little smile and shook her head which had only confused him more!

As Rico drove back to the restaurant he told himself to just let it go. However, he couldn’t get Melanie’s face out of his mind. Maybe talking about their parents’ anniversary had triggered something. Rico realized he didn’t know a whole lot about Melanie’s family. He knew she had two brothers, and to his knowledge, her parents were still married and together. Although now that he gave it some thought, he realized Melanie didn’t really talk a great deal about her parents. Her grandparents were the ones she talked about, and he knew she missed them since moving to St. Louis.

Rico arrived back at the restaurant as the lunch rush was thinning. He walked through the dining area and caught site of his restaurant manager, Franco Cortez. Rico motioned for him to follow him to his office. Unlocking the door, Rico went in and took a seat behind his desk. Franco came in a few moments later and greeted his boss, Hola, Rico. How’s Pedro’s hand? That looked like one nasty cut he had there.

Rico shook his head in agreement. Yeah, it took eight stitches to close it. I called his wife and told her to pick him up at the hospital. I knew he wouldn’t be able to work this evening and probably not for a few more days. Thankfully, he didn’t damage any tendons.

That’s good news. Should I call in a back-up guy for this evening? Since it’s just Monday our crowd shouldn’t be too big tonight. If it was a Friday or Saturday, that would be a different story.

Rico looked at his manager and said with a grin, Hey Franco, I have an idea. Why don’t we call abuela Rosita and ask her to come fill in?

Franco looked at his boss like he’d grown another head. Are you serious? Rosita comes in here, and we’re all shaking in our shoes before she ever leaves! She walks into the kitchen, and my cook staff runs for the walk-in freezers. Of course she just goes after them, but they try and hide at least for a moment. Franco laughed and continued, We always think we’re running a good kitchen, but by the time Rosita leaves we’re not sure we should even be in the kitchen!

Rico threw his head back and laughed. I know! Believe me, I know man. She’s the same way at mama and papa’s house. The cleaning lady will just have been there, and Rosita walks in and finds every speck of dust she left behind! It drives my mom crazy, but what do you do? Rosita still cleans her own living quarters at my parents’ house. She refuses to let anyone else come in and do it for her.

Franco shook his head in agreement. "I can imagine. But if it’s all the same to you, let’s not call Rosita, and we’ll wing it for tonight. If things get too busy I’ll call in someone who’s off and get them in here. Okay, I better get back out there so I’ll see you later."

As Franco left his office, Rico sat back in his chair. He smiled as he recalled the conversation they’d just had about his grandmother. Their paternal grandmother had basically moved to St. Louis after unexpectedly losing her husband. Rico’s parents were still young and his dad was building his finance and investment business. Rico’s mom was still in medical school at the time. Undoubtedly, their lives were pretty hectic with two small kids and another on the way. Rosita had come to stay to get away from the painful memories in Miami at the time. She’d eventually just decided to stay on and help. That was twenty-something years ago and she’d stayed through two toddlers and three more births.

Rico could remember all the years of dance lessons from both his grandmother and other instructors she found for them. By the end of high school they were dancing at the competition level and winning. Camila had danced with them, and the two of them had always been a team.

One of their friends, Pablo Rivera, from those days was still one of Rico’s closest friends even now. Rico was actually in business with Pablo, and his partner Raoul, in a club in Miami. Rico played the role of silent partner and left the management to the other two men. They’d built a successful business and Rico only got involved when there were major financial decisions to be made. Pablo and Raoul both knew Rico was only a telephone call away, and he actually visited quite frequently anyway.

Miami had become Rico’s refuge in the months following Cam’s death. His family was grieving, as was he. After a while he simply couldn’t deal with his own pain and theirs too. He remembered the first time he’d arrived on Pablo and Raoul’s doorstep late one night. They’d opened the door, and without a word had ushered him into their home. He’d stayed for two weeks without any contact with family or friends. He’d called his restaurant and club managers daily to check in, but other than that there was no contact. Pablo had called his family, as well as Camila’s, and to this day Rico had no idea what’d been said.

Rico and Camila had lived in Miami for a while after they married. Rico had worked in the family businesses following his graduation from college. When the time was right, they’d returned to St. Louis and opened Club Santos and the restaurant. Cam had taken a job teaching at the parish school. She’d had a degree in elementary education, and teaching was simply her calling.

The young couple had wanted to start a family as soon as they arrived back in St. Louis. They’d pursued it right after getting settled and when Cam had become pregnant they’d been overjoyed at the news. They’d both been anxiously awaiting the arrival of their new son when tragedy had struck and Rico had lost both of them. In one fateful night his world had shattered and the pieces were slung completely out of his reach. He hadn’t known how to go on for a while. He simply didn’t understand how he was supposed to get up in the morning and put one foot in front of the other. A concept that had been second nature to Rico had become something so monumental he couldn’t comprehend the basics of it anymore.

Rico’s world had eventually started to right itself somewhat again after a couple of years. However, he’d believed nothing in his world would ever be the same again. He would never be the same again, and the thought both saddened him and made him angry at the same time. Rico tried to not dwell on it quite as often any more, but there were still times when he hopped on a plane and headed to Miami for a few days.

Rico had noticed in the past year there were days he actually found himself able to think of Cam with a more positive attitude. He’d think about her gentle disposition, how beautiful she was and her sweet personality. He was discovering that weeks could go by without him feeling totally weighted down with grief and remorse, but then the guilt would hit again. He’d end up chastising himself for actually having a few weeks where he felt almost normal.

Rico knew in his heart that Camila wouldn’t have wanted this existence for him. In truth, Rico knew Cam would probably be pissed at him for acting this way. Camila would have wanted him to be happy, even without her. They’d loved each other so much, and the other’s happiness had always been a priority. However, he still hadn’t figured out what his happy was anymore. There were no guidelines to follow, no rules, and certainly nothing to gauge it all by.

Rico knew his family, and Camila’s too, wanted him to move on. And by moving on he knew they wanted him to meet someone else and have a relationship again. Rico hadn’t even dated since Cam’s death. On one of his trips to Miami a couple of years ago he’d found himself in a situation that he didn’t know how to define. There was a group that had met at the club one weekend to dance, and Raoul’s cousin had shown up with a few of her friends in tow. Rico had met the young woman on several occasions, and they were on friendly terms. She was attractive and only a couple of years younger than Rico. She’d been through a rather nasty break-up prior to their night out, and the two of them had discovered a lot in common after a few drinks. The main connection had been they were both nursing the loss of someone in their lives. Rico rarely ever drank alcohol, much less overindulged, but that weekend happened to mark the second anniversary of Cam’s death.

Rico and the young woman had ended up leaving together in a cab and had gone back to her apartment. For the first time in his life Rico had slept with another woman other than his late wife. He and Camila had been each other’s firsts. Since her death, his sexual desire had seemed to be on hold just like everything else in his life. After the whole one night stand experience he realized the alcohol had contributed greatly to the circumstance he found himself in that night. Alcohol, loneliness and grief were a triangle that was hard to escape. Rico had chosen to let it go rather than berate himself over it. He hadn’t allowed himself to wallow in guilt over it, but there hadn’t been a repeat since either.

Rico sat at his desk and realized he was another two years down the road and still holding back from living his life like a normal man his age. He’d given some serious thought recently to the idea of going out with someone, but thinking was as far as he’d gotten as of yet. Rico knew there was someone that came to mind and he tried brushing the thought aside. His thoughts of Melanie wouldn’t leave him alone today though. He assumed it was because he’d just spent time with her, and that was the reason she seemed to be on his mind.

Rico still couldn’t believe what had happened several months ago at Reid and Carli’s wedding reception. He still wondered what had come over him that night. He’d been sitting with Raoul, Pablo and several of his cousins at the reception, and they’d all been laughing and enjoying each other’s company all evening. Several of his cousins had danced with some of the guests throughout the night. Carli had several eligible female friends from work who’d attended the wedding, and they’d latched on to his charming and handsome Miami cousins right away.

Rico had remained at their table for most of the evening and had basically only left to visit the bar for drinks for the table or to talk with friends and family. Cam’s family was there, and he’d spent time with them throughout the evening too. As the night wore on his mood had gotten darker, and he’d finally decided it was time for him to leave. He didn’t want his own unhappiness to affect his sister’s big night. It was almost time for the reception to wind down anyway.

Rico was about to leave when he caught sight of someone walking toward their table. When he turned he’d been surprised to see Melanie standing beside him. Rico had noticed earlier how beautiful she looked tonight in her pale pink gown. The style looked very flattering on her as the neckline accented her breasts and left her arms bare. Her naturally curly blonde hair was pulled up in a loose style and her blue eyes were just as vibrant as ever. Her skin always fascinated Rico with what he guessed was referred to as a peaches and cream complexion. Her skin tone was definitely in sharp contrast to his much darker one.

Rico looked at Melanie as she stood there beside their table and felt a sudden punch to his stomach as he watched her pull her bottom lip between her teeth. When she finally released it Rico realized he was still staring at her mouth. Melanie had looked at him and simply said, Dance with me. It wasn’t a question or command. It was just a statement with no more assertion than if she’d said watch television with her. As he stood there, he realized everyone at the table was looking at them. He knew Pablo and Raoul were probably both shaking in their shoes waiting to see what his response would be.

Rico’s thoughts were skating all over the place. He hadn’t danced with anyone since Cam’s death. It was their thing and had been for many years. However, he also realized that the act itself wasn’t the significance. It was the memory of how he’d felt when he held her in his arms, and how they’d moved in unison with one another. Cam had been a wonderful dancer, and their moves were always effortless.

Melanie was standing beside him waiting patiently for his answer. Rico had dug deep and finally looked at her and said, Okay. He was sure he heard an audible gasp from either Pablo or Raoul, but he wasn’t sure which. Melanie had simply held out her hand, and he’d taken it in his. They’d walked to the floor, and he heard the first strains of an old song by REO Speedwagon called Can’t Fight This Feeling. The irony of the song selection wasn’t lost on him.

Rico and Melanie reached the floor, and he took her in his arms. As they began moving to the music Rico was swamped with emotions. This was a significant step for him, and he couldn’t believe it himself that he was actually out on the dance floor again. He looked down into the beautiful face of the woman in his arms and realized he was glad it was her he’d taken it with. Melanie looked up at him and she’d smiled that sweet, open smile that always lit up her face. Rico bent down and said, I think we’ve caused quite a stir in my family, you realize that right?

Melanie smiled and said dryly, Really? I would’ve never guessed. I mean, just because your three siblings, your mother and your grandmother are standing together and watching us doesn’t necessarily mean anything!

Rico laughed and then replied, That’s true. They do that on a regular basis no matter what the situation! My family, you have to love them!

Melanie looked up at him and said, "Actually, I do. Your family has been wonderful to me since I’ve moved here. Since Carli and I became friends they’ve done
