Know Your Bible for Kids - Donna K. Maltese

    Abba!

    Messiah

    What is the Messiah?

The person who would save Israel’s people and bring them back to God.

    What is it all about?

Authors of the Old Testament wrote that the Messiah would be anointed—He would have oil poured on Him as a sign of being set apart by God. He would be a prophet, a priest, and a king from King David’s family. In the New Testament, many people—even demons—who met Jesus knew He was the Messiah!

What is an important verse about the Messiah?

These [powerful works of Jesus] are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.

    JOHN 20:31 NLT

What does that mean to me?

Want to be powered up? Read your Bible. It’s got tons of stories proving Jesus is not only the Messiah but your Messiah! And you have life by His power!

    Sin

    What is sin?

Doing wrong. Sins such as lying, greed, and selfishness are just as bad as murder, lust, and stealing.

    What is it all about?

A person can sin against himself, others, or God. Jesus came to earth to save people from their sins. He gives them the power to win out over their wrongdoings.

What is an important verse about sin?

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

    PSALM 119:11 NLT

What does that mean to me?

Your best protection against sin is God’s Word (the Bible). So find a good verse and learn it by heart. Then the next time you’re tempted to do something God wouldn’t like, you can say the verse. It’ll give you the power to walk away!

    Christian

    What is a Christian?

What the New Testament people of Antioch called those who followed Jesus Christ.

    What is it all about?

Barnabas and Saul were in Antioch, teaching many people about Jesus. Members of their church group were talking about Christ all the time. So people called these believers Christians, which means the household of Christ.

What is an important verse about a Christian?

Suppose you suffer. Then it shouldn’t be because you…do evil things… . But suppose you suffer for being a Christian. Then don’t be ashamed. Instead, praise God because you are known by that name.

    1 PETER 4:15–16

What does that mean to me?

Just calling yourself a Christian doesn’t make you one. To be a true Christian, you must act like Jesus. That happens when you follow Him with all your heart.

    Creation

    What is creation?

Making something out of nothing—which is something only God can do! Humans cannot make something out of nothing. That’s because everything they make begins with something God already created!

    What is it all about?

In the very beginning, everything was dark. Then, just by God speaking words, light appeared. Next, the heavens, oceans, land, trees, plants, fish, birds, animals, and people came into being! And everything God made in six days He called good. On the seventh day, God rested from all the work He had done.

What is an important verse about creation?

God made us. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good things. Long ago God prepared them for us to do.

    EPHESIANS 2:10

What does that mean to me?

God made you in His image, to be just like Him. So you, too, have an urge to make and do good things. What can you make to please God or to help others—or both?

    Tree of Life

What is the Tree of Life?

A tree in the Garden of Eden. People who ate its fruit would have eternal life.

    What is it all about?

Adam and Eve sinned by eating fruit from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. To keep them from living forever, God sent them out of the Garden. Then He set up a flaming sword to guard the path to the Tree of
