For years, a dynamic and diverse retinue of writers have been plying their craft on tumblogs, filling the folds of #poetry and #prose with original works which resonate with thousands of readers around the globe. A Literation began with a mission to expose these writers and their community, joining hands with the extant community of photographers and illustrators who infuse Tumblr with their creations. In this issue, 15 artists lend their eyes and voices to an immersive experience that includes works by three-time Pushcart nominee Richard King Perkins II, Jake 501, Clint Irwin, and Hamnah Shahid.

Literation Publications

A Literation is a grassroots electronic literary magazine founded by a handful of bloggers who met on Tumblr. The journal is aimed at spotlighting the dynamic and diverse community of writers and artists on Tumblr and to bring them to the attention of not just other Tumblr users, but to all literary channels—both traditional and non-conventional. A Literation hopes to facilitate the continued integration of “Internet Art” into the literary community, while innovating new and provocative forms of literature and providing subscribers and contributors alike an opportunity to participate in what is truly a joint venture between the reader and the writers.

Each month, this publication receives a mountain of submissions. I point this out because I am proud — not of the numbers alone but of the mass forward movement they signify: the emotion, the self-enrichment, and hard work that underlies the artistry and, most importantly, the bravery I see, with each submission, in my friends and colleagues in the Tumblr creative ranks. This bravery — the willingness of everyone who submits work to acknowledge their fears of rejection and overcome them, to bare their souls to we editors and, in turn, the world — is something I honestly never expected. I thought it would take longer. I thought it would be a more difficult row to hoe.

I’ve been a member of the TWC long enough to confidently say that what lies outside those dashboard blue walls is frightening territory for even the most brilliant or follower-rich artists I’ve come across. Yet here I sit, for the second month now, sifting through and falling in love with piece after precious piece.

To our readers, I extend a great appreciation to you for supporting this ongoing endeavor to reveal the best of a digital community to the world at large. To the artists and writers gracing these pages, thank you and congratulations. It’s my hope that through the process of submission, rejection, refinement, and eventual acceptance, you will find yourself better for the experience.

May your worries today be happier than yesterday’s.
