From the shadows of Longwood Forest to the Hills of the Moon, Gladius must survive encounters with a near extinct scimitar cat, an ornery dragon, a horde of death bats and a tumultuous underground river which leads to more trouble.
Along the way, he makes new acquaintances and discovers the true meaning of friendship, including Elle – a girl who captivates his heart.

Author

J. A. Paul

J. A. Paul is the author of the Gladius Adventure Series, where a simple run through the woods turns into an epic coming-of-age story certain to please those with a wild spirit who crave the next adventure. J. A. Paul started writing short stories early on and spent many years learning the craft. Then one night after a long bedtime story, his sons challenged him to write a book. He borrowed an idea from a friend and asked his boys to choose three things to include in the story. They chose a dragon, a tree and a ruby and from the seed of that idea the story of Gladius grew. J.A. Paul set out to show his three sons that if you set your mind to something, it can be done. For more stories and information visit the author's web site at www.authorJAPaul.com

Gladius is 15 and ready to take his Bartlett Trial, he will be spending one month in the Longwood Forest. His father and brother have huge adventure stories from their Bartlett Trial so Gladius is going to try and out do their stories. He also wants to win some money to help pay the taxes on the farm.As Gladius starts he adventures, he runs into several different creatures, meets some great friends, and decides if he is going to help fight the people fight the tyrant Mulhurt who is intent on taking over all the lands.I love when you can get wrapped up in stories about finding your own place in the world. Gladius is a wonderful, brave character. He goes on this adventure and it seems he just keeps finding people and different creatures. He seems to be collecting more and more people to take care of but in the end it helps him with his trial. This is a great book for older kids to adults. Since it is the first book in a series I admit that I can’t wait to get into book two, Gladius and the Sea of Lost Souls.I received this book ages ago from the Library Thing Early Reader Program in exchange for an honest review.

I believe this style of writing is similar to Christopher Paolini and T.A. Barron. Fast Paced and well written, I read two books in this series and know this is a definite adventure book for boys. Girls will enjoy them as well, but the genre is fitting for reluctant boy readers.

Description: Gladius and the Bartlet Trial is the tale of fifteen year old Gladius Oldmont's epic adventure into adulthood. The Bartlett Trial is a journey that all Wiggins must complete at the age of fifteen in order to be considered an adult. So Gladius, filled with his father's stories, believes he is ready to journey into the Longwood Forest and become a legend in his 17th century village and beyond. Besides the usual stresses of the trial, Gladius is also being relied on to win prize money so that his family can keep their farm, and he always lends a helping hand to those he meets along the way - taking on a lot of extra responsibilities. But somehow, he manages to keep up a steady pace and face every obstacle, (scimitar cats, death bats, dragons, etc.), with bravery, intelligence, and the survival skills he's been taught since childhood. He even manages to make friends along the way, including Elle, a beautiful girl. Unfortunately, he also runs into Mulhurt, an evil tyrant, who terrorizes all the surrounding lands in search of an ancient absolute power. Now he must decide whether to continue his trial, or join forces against Mulhurt and save everything he cares about. Can he find the ancient power before Mulhurt does, and prevent the destruction of his home? Review: For a first time author, J. A. Paul definitely knows how to craft an epic story-line, as well as fully developed characters and dialogue richly detailed in "story-teller" fashion. Even me, a college-aged woman, enjoyed the fast-paced and fantastical realm created by the author, so I know middle schoolers and older grades will be excited and entertained by this read; especially since I have already been begged by two cousins and a nephew, (ages 11, 13, and 15), to lend out this book. Not only is it a great book for kids, but I believe that it is a great opportunity for parents to read with their kids and get involved. There is so much to learn from this book, including survival skills and life lessons, that I think kids would be really interested in; I know I was! I hear that this is the first in a trilogy, so I can't wait for the next installment, and I will be passing my copy along to a few kids who I know will love it. I could see this becoming some sort of anime or graphic novel, and I will keep an eye out for any other books by J. A. Paul; another book to review coming soon, I hope? I recommend this action-packed adventure to kids 9 and up!Rating: On the Run (4.5/5)*** I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

This was an adventurous, fast-paced story aimed for tweens and up. Gladius starts on a simple quest and ends up taking up a much bigger one shortly after meeting Flint. It will prove to be the challenge of his life as he's up against large cats, dragons, and bats controlled by an evil tyrant bent on destroying whatever is necessary to gain absolute power over all. Fortunately, Gladius will make some friends to help him survive it all, and maybe come back with more than he could have hoped for to make it all worthwhile. A great read for younger readers with lots of action and a mystery to be unravelled to keep them hooked.

I love reviewing all different kinds of books, and while I loose myself in them, I have to say I also enjoy getting to know some of the authors who contribute to those pages. I had the pleasure of corresponding back and forth a bit with J.A. Paul before I ever read his book. I liked him right from the start and had a feeling his writing style would be just as engaging. He did not disappoint me!Gladius and the Bartlet Trial is the perfect story for middle school aged children through adults who are yearning for a new adventure. The Bartlet Trial is a test of a young Wiggin's ability to survive one full lunar cycle in the dangerous Longwood Forest. The main character, Gladius, sets out on his very first adventure through the forest and, after having been regaled with his father's and brothers' adventures over the years, he sets out with some pretty large shoes to fill. Beyond having to bring home tales of bigger and better adventures, Gladius is also counted on to bring home prize money for his trial that will pay the taxes to help his family keep their farm. Along the way the 15 year old Gladius runs into some pretty strange and dangerous creatures. He also makes some new friends and joins in aiding them against the evil tyrant, Mulhurt. Gladius and the Bartlet Trial was as charming as it was captivating. As a parent I would have no problem with my nine year old advanced reader picking this book up, which he has already asked to do. I feel I must add here that both of my boys (ages 9 and 12) do tend to judge books by their covers first and they have both ogled the cover in my Kindle selection window and begged to be the first to read it. I believe the exact words were: “Ohhh, that one looks cool, I got dibs!” Luckily for them, there's more to this book than the cover - much more! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story. It was perfectly paced, extremely well written, and had absolutely no bad language in it at all. As a parent to avid readers I can't ask much more than that. I simply can't wait to read more from J.A. Paul!
