    Chapter 1

Lisa ran from the shower, water dripped down her body onto the floor. She slipped on the wet surface and almost fell on her butt as she tried to reach the den phone. The voice from the caller ID informed her of the caller’s identity, Marcus. She didn’t want the machine to answer.

Hello? she asked, breathless from her mad dash to the den.

A phone in the bedroom – now that would be useful, Lisa thought with a frown on her face. The issue never existed before. In the past, if Maggie called, she didn’t run for the phone. Then again, she knew Maggie would call back.

She wasn’t confident that either brother would call her back. A week since Halloween night and this was the first call. She was very afraid they’d just leave a message, feeling in all their manly wisdom that they had done their part by notifying her. Maybe it was unfair of her to judge them before the fact, but so far their track record stunk.

Lisa? Why do you sound so breathless sweetheart? Marcus asked.

Umm… Conscious of her nudity, she decided not to answer that honestly. Blushing, she stumbled over her words. I-I was in the other room and had to run to get the phone. There, not the full truth, but not a lie either.

Ahh… he said, a chuckle in his voice.

God, hopefully he hadn’t guessed where she ran from. Standing here practically naked holding a towel around her body with one hand was bad enough. For him to actually know what she was doing or even closely guess? Embarrassing.

I-I was getting ready for tonight, she stuttered only slightly. That wasn’t too bad.

Oh sweetheart… She sagged in disappointment – he was going to cancel. We are going to have to cancel tonight. Yep, sometimes it sucks to be right.

Disappointment lay heavy on her heart. Their first real date, and they were canceling. It’s okay really… I-I just got home and hadn’t even bothered to get ready yet. Lisa winced at yet another lie. Well, she had just gotten home. She’d stopped at the salon to have them do a special hairstyle for tonight.

Lisa we’re really sorry, but the babies are sick and we just can’t leave them with the nanny, Marcus said, worried.

Oh no! Of course you have to stay home with them. There’s no way she could hold that against them. Besides, she loved those babies too.

Marcus released what sounded like a relieved breath. Had he been afraid she would freak out? Geez, she hoped they knew her better than that. We figured you would understand.

An idea hit her. Duh, it was so obvious! Why don’t I come over and help you with them? She began calculating her wardrobe before he even answered. Her old jeans with a T-shirt would probably work the best. Throw in an extra pair of cloths in a backpack, just in case they threw up. It took her a minute to realize her question had been met with silence. Hello? Did she lose connection?

Umm… Nope, didn’t lose connection at all.

If it’s okay with you, we’ll just take a rain check on tonight sweetheart. Tobias voice surprised her. She could hear one of the babies crying in the background. Poor things…

I told Marcus I could come over and help…

He interrupted her before she could continue. Really that’s sweet, but we got this. More crying. Thanks for the offer though. We’ll try to call you sometime this weekend. The crying got louder and in stereo. Sorry, I really need to go. Bye.

B… She heard the click then dial tone on the other end.

Well that was weird. Why didn’t they want her help? Frustrated, she removed the shower cap from her head. No big date happening this weekend.

It was completely understandable; sick babies took priority. She did offer to help, but for their own reasons they rejected the idea. No, they didn’t explain those reasons, but what could she do? Yeah, it hurt a little, but hey… they are the parents right? Well there was nothing she could do about it tonight. She might confront them about their weird behavior later, but not now. Not this weekend, maybe not even this year…

Just my luck. They cancel and then reject my offer for help and I can’t even complain about it without sounding all bitchy and unreasonable. Yep this relationship was starting out so well.

The phone rang and she answered it quickly. Maybe they had changed their minds about her coming over? Hello? The excitement in her voice was so obvious. Way to go… sounding all desperate and needy.

Well hello to you too. Well crap… it was only Maggie.

    Oh, it’s you.

Well, I love you too sunshine… Crap, now Maggie would hound her for an explanation. What’s wrong, and why do I feel insulted by your disappointment?

Her disgruntled tone made Lisa laugh. I’m sorry. I thought it was the guys calling back.

Hmm… that doesn’t sound to promising. Don’t tell me they canceled on your first official date?

Well… She hesitated, not wanting a lecture from Maggie on her uncharacteristic selfishness.

No fucking way! They actually canceled? I was just joking. I can’t believe they canceled… She couldn’t let her start to rant without knowing all the details. It was unfair to let her think badly of them.

    It’s not really like that…

Don’t start making excuses for them…

I’m not! Will you stop ranting a minute and listen? Lisa asked in frustration.

    Okay, start talking, Maggie demanded.

The babies are sick and they didn’t want to leave them with the nanny while we went out. That’s a reasonable excuse for canceling, so don’t be so hard on them please.

But? Maggie asked the one word, a powerful reminder of how close the two were.

    What do you mean ‘but’?

Don’t give me that bullshit Lisa. You’re upset. How about you tell me why? I know it’s not because the kids are sick. What aren’t you telling me?

It’s not that big of a deal… Lisa answered evasively, uncomfortable with her selfishness.

Spit it out and stop the crap Lisa! Uh–oh. Maggie was getting frustrated with her, so not a good sign.

Okay, geez, you don’t have to get so testy. It’s not that big of a deal I’m just being a bit selfish, Lisa answered, sulking.

Lisa heard Maggie sigh across the phone line. Lisa, you don’t have a selfish bone in your body and you know it. Just tell me what happened and let me decide on how unreasonable you were being…

It’s really not that big of a deal. I just offered to come over and help and got rejected. It hurt my feelings a little is all. It made me feel like they didn’t trust me or something. Well to be honest, after Halloween I was under the impression I might be a stepmom someday so it just surprised me a little. I know I’m being unreasonable, but I can’t seem to help feeling hurt.

Stop rambling. You aren’t being unreasonable. Maggie paused. Did you ask them why? How to answer that? Lisa heard Maggie groan on the other end of the phone. Of course you didn’t. Why would you, of all people, ask a perfectly reasonable question like that? You know Lisa, it’s really not rude to ask people why sometimes. Just pretend it’s me.

It’s not like that… Lisa growled in frustration. Look, it was awkward. I was talking to Marcus and the phone went silent when I offered. I actually thought for a minute we lost connection. He does have A… The loud screeching in Lisa’s ear reminded her Maggie had the same carrier. She hung up and waited for the call back.

Right on cue the phone rang. She didn’t even bother to say hello. See what I mean? Drop calls when you come into a city. Ridiculous…

Maggie laughed – that was a good sign. At least she wasn’t irritated any more. Lisa, I know how you feel about… that company. You got off track though hon. Tell me the rest.

How can you stand to use their service? Maggie groaned. Okay, okay, I’ll let it go. You’re right, I got sidetracked, sorry. Hmm, where was I? Oh yeah. I was telling you how I thought the call had dropped. Tobias must have taken the phone away from Marcus at some point and the babies started crying. Loudly, I might add.

Getting sidetracked again I think… Maggie interrupted.

Yeah, yeah. Anyways, I repeated my offer to Tobias and he politely told me how sweet I was to offer, but no thanks. I don’t know why, but it just felt off.

He didn’t explain why? Maggie asked.

Nope, just said he had to go and told me bye before I got a dial tone.

The way you said that… Maggie was quiet for a minute. Crap, Lisa thought, hoping her friend would let it slide. He hung up on you before you even said goodbye? No such luck…

It’s not that big of a deal really. Lisa’s tone sounded defensive even to her own ears.

Don’t make up excuses for him. It’s bullshit and you know it. Their list of fuck ups is getting long. Shit, they haven’t even bothered to call you once since they dropped you off.

    They called tonight, Lisa defended.

Let’s face it Lis, they aren’t really starting out with a very good track record in my book.

It’s only the first week. We’re just getting used to each other, that’s all. Now if in a few weeks things remain unchanged, then I’d have to agree with you. This is just the beginning though.

I always say you should begin how you plan to go on, but I know how stubborn you can be. I also know how much in love with them you are. So, I’ll shut up and just support you. Just promise me you won’t be foolish. If weeks go by and nothing has changed…

That won’t happen. Trust me Maggie. They may not be convincing right now, but I know they didn’t lie the other night. They love me. I know they’ve never had a serious relationship. Maybe they just need to fumble around a bit, while they learn how to make this work.

I just don’t want to see you hurt Lis… Maggie said quietly.

Trust me, this will work. We are meant to be together Maggs. I know it. We might screw up from time to time, none of us have ever been in a real relationship. We’ll get the hang of it, no worries, and later on when we are more secure…

Maggie sighed heavily into the silence. You will ask them about tonight. I think you’re wrong about letting this slide, but I love you so…

I love you too Maggs. Don’t worry so much. Everything will be fine. Lisa’s stomach gurgled loudly, reminding her that she hadn’t eaten since
