Every place, every house, and each individual in this beautiful state in India was, as if, suddenly clouded in suspicion. There was unseen fear in the atmosphere and the eyes of the people reflected several different images of trepidation.
The dwellers of this beautiful valley had become so much habitual to death and destruction that they were not surprised anymore to hear the news of killings and encounters. However, two recent incidents, which were not unprecedented, surprised the Chaudhry family.

Every place, every house, and each individual in this beautiful state in India was, as if, suddenly clouded in suspicion. There was unseen fear in the atmosphere and the eyes of the people reflected several different images of trepidation.
The dwellers of this beautiful valley had become so much habitual to death and destruction that they were not surprised anymore to hear the news of killings and encounters. However, two recent incidents, which were not unprecedented, surprised the Chaudhry family.
The words like surprise, shock, amazement, and unprecedented had lost their meanings for the Kashmiris. The people believed that anything, however strange and unprecedented, was possible. Even if the sky parted and the oceans dried up the people living in the valley would not be surprised.
The conversations about such disastrous incidents were very casual:
One: They killed three last night.
Two: Where?
One: Near Dal Lake. One officer was also killed last night.
Two: Where are you going?
One: Shop.
Two: All right, take care. God be with you.
Encounters between the militants and the armed forces were a part of life there. Innocent Kashmiris were being persecuted from both sides. If they sheltered a militant or militants because
