About this ebook

How many were there? Enough. Over the centuries they had evolved to satisfy their needs with a more passive source of the nutrients they required; after all, blood was blood. But not for all. Some could not resist the ancient urge to satisfy their blood lust with the warm, flowing liquid of a living being. In those instances, errant members of the Network were tracked by the death squad known as the Shield, from whom there was no escape.

Amanda Brenner

Amanda Brenner is a native Midwesterner who has traveled extensively throughout the United States and now lives quietly with her husband and an assortment of wildlife visitors to their urban home.  Her interest in writing began at an early age when westerns were popular attractions at the local theater.  It seemed only natural that her first novel, Trail of Vengeance, should be in that genre.  After finishing a second western, Shadow of the Rope, she began to explore a new direction and completed three contemporary mysteries involving private investigator Sid Langdon, a self-doubting magnet for offbeat clients and hapless scenarios, the latest being The Mystery of the Nourdon Blue.  Amanda enjoys learning from the books she reads, a characteristic reflected in the research she includes in her own works. Thank you for your time.

You're sure? There's no doubt? Johan asked his father in a whispered tone.

No doubt. It's starting, his father replied in a similarly hushed voice. We must prepare him.

Johan, in his cassock and starched collar, shook his head and crossed himself. God help him, was all he said.

God help us all, his father added.

His father then looked at Jordan with pity and overwhelming sorrow, and began to explain the reason behind the changes that had come about in his formerly ordered life, changes which could not be denied, nor wished away, nor exorcised by any rite known to the church.

    Vanpir!

At the very mention of the word in the old language, Jordan knew. He had become one of the undead. The unholy. He began to cry. No! It can't be true, he thought.

It began in the southern part of Silesia in the year 1739. His name wasn't Jordan then. In that long ago time he was Friedrich Hoffmann, the son of Otto Hoffmann, a tailor, and his wife, Greta. His family consisted of his parents and their nine children—seven boys and two girls.
