Chapter One
Sitting on the bed in the little hotel room, Jenny counted her money—sixteen dollars and twenty-seven cents. That’s all the money left in her purse. The room at this run-down little hotel was paid through the end of the week, so at least she would have somewhere to lay her head, even if she was terrified that there were probably bed bugs in the mattress. The dingy walls held bad paint-by-number art work, the faded, pale off-white color was covered with years of grime, cigarette smoke, and who knew what else. The shabby floral-patterned bedspread was bunched up at the foot of the bed. Jenny sighed, her eyes trying not to fill with tears.
It was a hotel hookers took their customers to, the kind of place that had no problem with clients who wanted to pay by the hour, instead of the day. Jenny looked at the date on her watch and felt like crying again. She felt so beaten down. It was only Monday—she’d be out of money and food by Thursday at the latest. She laughed bitterly. It was a good thing her appetite was gone, not that it would change anything…even if she could eat. Her car needed gas if she was to be able to keep the appointment scheduled for later that day.
Jenny Carter didn’t know what she was going to do. That wasn’t true. She knew but just didn’t want to do it. The one-time sub to the only man she had ever loved was scared of the reception she would receive. Would Taylor throw her out? Laugh in her face? Jennifer couldn’t believe he agreed to the meeting. Jenny, as she went by now, had finally broken down and called the one man who would help her, but wondered if the price would be too high for her to pay for that help. She pulled her best outfit out of her suitcase and put it on a hanger. Taking it with her into the tiny bathroom, she turned on the shower before stripping and jumping in. She would have to scrub quickly as the steam took the wrinkles out of her outfit. She knew there wasn’t enough hot water to do both separately. After washing up, she carefully did her makeup and hair. Taking a final glance at herself in the small mirror with the cracked corner, Jenny realized that she couldn’t hide the deep circles under her eyes with the cosmetics and her hollowed-out cheeks bore proof that she hadn’t been eating well. All that didn’t matter, though. She just needed Taylor Beck to help her.
Her days as a Party Girl were over—her very existence was all that mattered now. Jenny would beg in the streets before she went home to her aging and judgmental parents. They had never bothered to understand her when she was younger and had needed their approval like any child would. Now, Jenny didn’t care enough to find out if they had changed at all. Her parents hadn’t wanted her to go away to college. Her mother demanded she stay home and attend the local college, while her pussy-whipped father simply went along with whatever his strong-willed wife said. The smart and creative girl went behind her parents’ backs and applied for scholarships and loans, lying to her father when she needed his signature. Soon, Jenny had offers of full scholarships to a couple of universities, and chose the one farthest from home, knowing that her parents would never bother themselves to visit. Her car was paid for and was in her name, the insurance as well. So when the day came to leave, Jenny packed her things, kissed her father’s cheek, and tried to kiss
