Peterson, a crew member from a spaceship visiting Mars, purchases a giant, pig-like creature called a wub. Although Captain Franco means to make a meal of the strange beast, the wub proves to be likeable and intelligent by discussing the travels of Odysseus and the impact of myth on the human spirit.

Philip K. Dick was an American science-fiction novelist, short-story writer and essayist. His first short story, “Beyond Lies the Wub,” was published shortly after his high school graduation. Some of his most famous short stories were adapted for film, including “The Minority Report,” “Paycheck,” “Second Variety” (adapted into the film Screamers) and “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” (adapted into the film Total Recall).

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, PHILIP K. DICK (1928–1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Philip K. Dick's first published short story involves an alien pig, called a wub by the natives, that is brought aboard an Earth ship among other Martian livestock to be devoured by the crew during their long voyage home. However, the situation changes when the wub speaks-in plaintive but eloquent English thanks to its telepathic ability. The question now is, what to do with the wub?
