    The Pornstar in the Mirror

Sadie arranged the pillows so that they would not obscure the lamp. She'd picked out a lamp with a lacy shade, to gentle the light, to match the lace of her stockings, the borders of the pillows.

Yes, Zach said, voice Skype-distorted. Poor sound quality, but at least that wouldn't be a problem. All the recording was happening on her computer, with her camera, which he controlled remotely. That's perfect. Did you get another pillow? Actually, two more. Build 'em up. I want a big mountain of pillows, for verticality, composition, you know?

Fine, she said. She tossed two more giant, square pillows—almost half her size, and she wasn't short—onto the bed. The lace on her stockings itched. It was a cold spring day and though she'd turned the heat up, the air still felt chilly. She was always cold. Anyway there was a fresh sprinkle of snow outside, sparkling under the streetlamps. Her parents were on vacation for the week, which was why Zach had suggested the plan in the first place. He'd been itching to do this since that party in January. She looked sidelong at the Skype window; Zach's blurry face grinned at her. Clicks and clacks of his typing crackled out from her speakers. The thought made her shiver. The shivery feeling was why she agreed to him, to all of this.

It does look very old-fashioned, she said, surveying her bed. The immense pillows, the lacy lamp, the spread of additional curtains behind the headboard—it all seemed terribly Victorian. The magic of thrift shop finds. Are you sure this is the look you're going for?

Period pieces are fun, Zach said. "Besides, it was a special request. That's the beauty of amateur, you can do sensual shoots."

    Right, she
