In the year 8016 the Knights of Helder had no choice but to beseech the help of my kind, the demons of Darkhelm. Foul stones had fallen from the heavens, cast down by a villainous god, and the knights could not venture near them without suffering an infernal death. The rocks spread disease to the villagers and compelled peaceful men to beat each other with their fists till death.

And so their king, the ruler of the Knights of Helder, had his laborers unseal the cave entrance to my diabolical realm. When I emerged to greet him, the proud man dropped to his knees and begged me to remove the stones. Of course, I had watched all their misery with great pleasure from below and could not help but laugh at his desperation.

Yes, certainly we would gather up the scourge. My demons were restless and grateful for any excuse to venture to the mortal realm without repercussions from the gods. However, there would be a price. I would name it later, and he would oblige me no matter how terrible it may be. The king accepted this dire contract with a nod of his head.

I led a hundred demons down the main road of the village towards the site of the curse. A demon army is a most fearsome thing to behold, but with me at its head that terror is amplified twice over. I stand at least a foot higher than any of these mortals, and even half a foot taller than any of my kind. This doesn’t include the height of my curling broad horns which were again larger than any of my kind, and fit crown for me. Smaller horns grew from my imposing shoulders, three on each side. I wore scant armor, allowing all to be in awe of the tremendous muscles of my chest, back, and torso. Below this I have the mighty legs, feet, and tail of a dragon, though one without scales. A loincloth concealed my front; my thick tapered tail concealed my buttocks. And yes, though a most loathsome creature I must seem I’m considered handsome by most of the females of our kind. My face is somewhat mortal in seeming, despite demonic eyes and markings. I’ve a strong, regal chin, and lush black hair I allow to drape to my shoulders.

The only one permitted to walk astride me is my dear Councilor Randell. He’s of my same species of demon though smaller than me, with his muscular arms appearing quite slender in comparison. The rest of his body is concealed by the long draping velvet and silk robes of his royal position. Randell’s black hair has a top knot between his horns, with loose flowing tresses spilling over his shoulders. His face is longer and thinner than mine, and he’s only half my age, if that. The females of our kind find him exceedingly handsome also, but most that do are not yet women. His popularity comes from the younger generation, for they feel him far less intimidating than me. He’s a prince of sorts, and indeed, I dote on him as though his status were truly that high.

Flanking our path into the village were all the Knights of Helder. They stood as a barrier between us and the townsfolk. The clean-faced youths wore their jousting armor and gripped the hilts of their swords with white knuckles. I saw fear in most, bloodlust in a few, and revulsion in all the others.

Do they really think they could fight us? Randell said with great amusement.

They may fail, but their god could cast us back to Darkhelm if we break our pact.

Of course, my king. But look how cocky they are. Clutching their swords as if to threaten us.

Not all of them. My eyes had fallen upon a boy with tresses of white blond hair and an angelic rosy face. He looked to be 15, no older, and a lovelier or more placid being I’d never seen. His beauty alone would have caught my eye, but unlike his brothers he did not clutch the hilt of his sword. This knight had his hands folded together and his head bowed.

I halted before him, thereby stopping our procession. You…lovely creature, why do you not grip your sword to threaten us like all your brothers?

I would not presume to threaten an ally, King Caine.

Randell shot me an astonished smile. We were both enchanted by the sweet tenor of his voice.

You think me an ally, pretty knight?

He lifted his crystal blue eyes just high enough to gaze upon me. You will end the suffering of my people—something we wholly failed to do in our service to them.

I could not help but smile at the charming knight. What is your name?

I truly meant him no malice with the question (at least I had not conjured any for him as of yet) but the boy became stricken with fear.

His trembling lips parted. Jonah…my lord. Jonah of Aquiel.

His terror was delightful to me, but what an easy response to garner. I would have liked to see more sublime emotion from him in my presence. I exchanged a glance with Randell and said, Then it’s for you, sweet Jonah of Aquiel, that we end your turmoil without unleashing any new ruin of our own.

I continued to lead my demon army onward.

"Do you think him a plant, my king? Someone to tempt us so we ask not for a greater
