About this ebook
Public speaking is a huge fear for many people, but it doesn't have to be. Speaking with confidence is actually something you can practice; it involves subtle physical actions and not some innate, natural charisma. I have had the great fortune to develop effective public speaking skills in the field through the myriad of my professional and educational experiences.
Having worked the stage as an educator, actor, entertainer, master of ceremonies and business professional, I have identified and developed expedient techniques that comprise the artistry of public speaking, be it on the theatre stage, in the classroom or in the boardroom. In developing this practical approach, I have borrowed techniques from non-traditional sources such as gambling analysis, police interrogation, theatre and improv and adapted them to help you become a better speaker in all situations. Aristotle summed it up best: We are what we repeatedly do.
Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
I wrote this book because even though there are hundreds of books on public speaking, I felt there was something missing - a practical approach.
Ivan Wanis Ruiz
I have over 15 years of public speaking and facilitation experience. Originally I was trained at the Ministry of Attorney General's Office of British Columbia in facilitation and spent two years travelling around the province speaking to youths from 5-18 about racism and violence. My speaking audiences were amazingly diverse. I might speak to 60 kindergarten students in the morning in an auditorium and 4 at risk teenagers in a youth detention centre in the afternoon and finish the evening in front of teachers and police officers. I also had the great honour of representing one of Canada's top universities (McGill) internationally as part of their elite case competition team speaking to business professionals and fellow business students worldwide. During this time I was asked by several professors at McGill Management to speak in front of their students and teach my techniques for public speaking. This is really where the concept of training others was born. Since then I have achieved an Advanced Toastmasters Gold designation from Toastmasters International, the highest designation available in communication under the Toastmasters system and was the president of the Walter Gage Toastmasters for 2 years; in which time we were awarded the Presidents Distinguished Club award from Toastmasters International and locally the District Star Award. I have also been a guest trainer at UBC Sauder School of Business Early Masters Program and The Interior Designers Institute of BC among many others. Most recently I was the Co-Host to the Vancouver International Salsafestival & the Shine Dance Festival speaking in front of over 1000 people nightly. Currently I am working with the Dale Carnegie Group in Ontario delivering High Impact Presentation Training. I am also currently a member of the Second City Conservatory Program.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great book that helps you to learn very practical ways of public speaking. The author uses a lot of examples and case studies that brings the ideas more to life. He also is sharing his own examples, and quite often reinstates that nervousness is quite common and we should learn ways not to simple overcome it but know how to speak with confidence through it.
I also did a course by Ivan in Coursera where he explores even more. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A lot of practical tips on public speaking very useful
