    Chapter 1

Coco! Molly called out in the crisp morning air, banging angrily on her neighbor's front door. In her frantic knocking, she paused and looked at her hands.

The youthful, tight flesh on the back of her hands was, by far, a more disconcerting sight than her face had been in the mirror. Her reflection, Molly saw perhaps a dozen times a day, but her hands were her constant companions. The young, soft, smooth hands before her looked like the hands of another woman, separate and apart from Molly's body. The idea made her dizzy.

She shook herself and returned to thumping loudly on Coco's door.

What...what... Coco drawled sleepily, answering the insentient knocking.

What have you done to me? Molly asked urgently, as the door swung open.

Darling! Coco perked up at the sight of Molly on her doorstep. You look wonderful, dear. Have you had your coffee? Coco waved for Molly to follow her into the house.

I don't want coffee! Molly demanded to Coco's back, as the young, blond woman started for the kitchen. I want to know what you did to me!

Nothing, Coco dismissed, then turned and said suggestively. Well, something. Last night was fun, honey...

No! Molly exclaimed in frustration. Look at me!

Yes, dear, Coco dismissed again. You look wonderful!

No! I'm... Molly looked at her hands, turning them before her face.

I said you'd be over. Didn't I tell you? Still think that I'm crazy?

It's some sort of trick! Molly tried.

No, no, Coco stepped behind the kitchen island and started preparing coffee. It's no trick.

    "But I'm...young."

I wouldn't say a day over twenty-five, Coco said with satisfaction.

Molly shook her head in disbelief. How? was all she could manage.

I told you last night, Coco scolded as she started the coffeemaker. The tithe...

    The what?

"These words to rede, Coco began to quote, Eternal youth/Extracts a price/As tithe and proof."

Eternal youth? Molly pulled at her hair in frustration. That's crazy.

It's not crazy, Coco pouted. Look in the mirror.

Molly was speechless. She wanted to curse, scream, but Coco was right. The proof was her very own face.

You mean, Molly started slowly, trying to wrap her mind completely around the idea. If I get off three times in a day, I never get a day older?

No dear, Coco corrected. You don't just stop getting older, you return to your prime. Look at yourself, darling. You look younger than your own daughters. You'll be this beautiful forever. How can you question such a thing?

The girls! In her panic, Molly had forgotten about the girls. She had to get home. Warn them. She started to leave, but then stopped herself.

But should I not be able to manage it, three times in a day? Molly asked.

"Thy rose's bloom/wiltith away," Coco replied.

Molly remembered how old she'd felt just the day before. She hadn't been tired, she hadn't been sick, she'd aged twenty years in two days.

I have to warn the girls, Molly said, turning again for the front door.

If you need anything, dear, Coco called after her. Just ask.

Molly didn't want to think about exactly what Coco meant.

Oh, and Molly, Coco added. Molly paused at the door. "Ed and I are having a little party this afternoon. Out by the pool. There's someone we really want you to meet. I do
