Then one night, in a chilly month with the sound of heavy rainfall all about, she once again fulfilled her duty and served the man his evening meal.

‘But after years of preparing this evening meal and standing silently behind the small cedar chair across from the large man with the thin and graying hair whom all amongst them still purported talked to God, she thought of the child who would never know her, and the words she would never be permitted to read and the life she was told she had no claim to, and she simply stared straight ahead and had no regrets for what she was now about to do.’

For she had decided tonight to prepare the man an evening meal of ‘comeuppance and a just dessert’.
