That bastard! He couldn’t even tell me himself? Amy read and reread the letter from her fiancé. Today was her wedding day and she was dressed and ready to leave for the church. Except there wasn’t going to be a wedding. Larry had changed his mind.

Furious, she glared at Grant Larson, her fiancé’s half-brother. He sent you to do his dirty work? Where is he? She tossed the letter onto the bed. She’d been stood up at the altar!

Grant ran a hand through his black hair. I don’t know. He came to my room, told me he couldn’t marry you, and then left after giving me that letter.

Eyes burning with tears, anger, and shame, Amy bunched the skirt of her wedding dress in her hands and whirled away. Did you know he was going to change his mind? Did you know about Marsha? Marsha, her best friend, now her ex-best friend. Amy couldn’t believe this was happening. She was in the middle of a damned cliché, no, two of them! Her fiancé dumping her for her best friend, and then finding herself practically left at the altar.

She whipped around. We had the rehearsal dinner last night then you all went to some club for his bachelor’s party. And she’d spent the night alone, wanting to get lots of rest so she’d be at her best today. Why didn’t he say something…?

Hurt and despair clogged her throat as reality hit. Larry had dumped her. She stared down at her dress, the yards and yards of white satin. Her wedding dress for a wedding that wouldn’t take place.

Oh god. The tears she’d held back fell.

Grant put his arm around her and drew her close. I’m so sorry, Amy.

She clung to Grant’s solid, muscular chest and cried as her heart shattered into a million pieces. His deep, soothing voice reverberated through her mind. Embarrassed, she pulled away. I’m sorry, Grant. I need to be alone, she said. The tears flowed faster, blinding her as she turned to flee to the bathroom, but she forgot to pick up her dress and stepped on the hem.

She cried out and flung out her arms. Grant caught her and brought her back to his chest. She stared up into his face. He was the opposite of his brother in so many ways. Both men were handsome, but Grant’s features were stronger. She looked at his square jaw, his long straight nose, and his deep mysterious blue eyes. Amy saw strength and even a certain hardness in Grant, whereas Larry was… pretty. She frowned. She’d never thought of Larry as pretty, but compared to his older brother, he came across as soft, young, and pretty.

    And a two-timing bastard.

Brushing a stray strand of hair from Amy’s face, Grant sighed. You need to get out of that dress before you get hurt.

Dress. Wedding. Oh my god, everyone is at the club. They’re waiting for us. She’d been about to leave for the exclusive country club Larry was a member of, when Grant showed up. Now she understood why Marsha had called to say she was sick and was unable to be there. Sick my ass.

I called the club on the way over, Grant said, his arms around her.

Amy picked up her skirts and left the warmth and security of his arms. She hurt so bad, she wanted to be held. Wanted someone to make her forget. I owe you for sparing me the humiliation of literally being jilted at the altar. She glanced around, her gaze lingering on her suitcases, packed for two weeks at the lake. Just her and Larry. Numb and confused, she wondered what she was supposed to do now. She wandered over to the bed and picked up the note, hoping that it had all been a mistake.

But it wasn’t. The words were just as cruel and heartbreaking the second time around. The last sentence caught her attention.

It would be better if you don’t return to work. Your final check, along with two-weeks severance pay, will be mailed.

Great. I’m jilted and fired! She sat on the bed and, forgetting that Grant was in the room, she cried. No fiancé, no husband, no best friend, and no job. Could the day get any worse?

Grant joined her on the bed. You have to stop, Amy. You’re going to be sick.

Can’t. Don’t care, she sobbed, the pain of rejection engulfing her. Go away, Grant.

Come on, Amy. Larry isn’t worth this. He mopped the tears from her face with his handkerchief

What the hell do you know? she hiccupped.

Grant stared down into her eyes. You know as well as I do that Larry can’t keep his dick zipped. His voice was suddenly hard, not soothing.

Shocked, Amy sucked in a breath and blinked. That’s cruel, Grant, she gasped at his reminder that she’d replaced Larry’s last secretary both in the office and in bed. He and Gloria weren’t engaged, she shot back. Fury dried her tears.

It’s the truth and the sooner you accept that marriage to my brother would have been a mistake, the sooner you’ll get on with your life.

You bastard. I have no life. She tossed the note at Grant. He jilted me. He fired me and I don’t even have a place to live. She’d moved out of her apartment. After her honeymoon, her home would have been with Larry. Everything she owned was either at his place or in storage.

I don’t have a home, she whispered. She had nowhere to go after she checked out of the hotel.

Grant stood and pulled her up. Enough. You’re not going to start crying again.

The command in his voice was as effective as a slap. Amy tipped her head back and glared at Grant. Excuse me if my life just fell apart on me. You did your duty, so go.

So you can stay here and cry and feel sorry for yourself? He lifted a brow.

Maybe I’m entitled to feel sorry for myself! Besides, what’s it to you?

His dark blue eyes flashed with anger. It’s a waste.

My life to waste, she cried, the tears falling. She shivered and wrapped her arms around herself. She felt cold, lost, and so alone. The room blurred. She shoved Grant but he didn’t move.

Dammit, Grant. She couldn’t see through the tears. Like a wounded animal, she needed a place to hide and be alone with her misery. Get out! I need to be alone. Her voice rose. I…

Grant bent his head and kissed her. Her lips parted in surprise and then she was kissing him back as though consumed by fever. Grief, hurt and anger found an outlet in the man holding her. Larry had tossed her aside without a care, crushed her heart and trampled her mind. She yearned to be touched. She needed to feel. She wrapped her arms around Grant’s neck and held on as he deepened the kiss.

His hands slid around her waist then glided down the satin fabric of her dress to the gentle slope of her buttocks, pulling her tight against him. She kissed him as though her life depended on it and pressed her body hard against his, seeking warmth and comfort.

This is wrong. It was wrong to kiss Larry’s brother, but Larry wasn’t here. He wasn’t hers any more. He belonged to Marsha. Tears stung Amy’s eyes even as desire sprang to life. She needed to feel something, anything but the pain of rejection, so she returned Grant’s kisses with a passion borne of desperation.

His mouth trailed down her neck. Amy let her head fall back. She moaned when he made his way down to the generous swells of her breasts revealed by the low cut neckline. Her body was alive. Moments ago, she’d just wanted to curl up and die. The throbbing between her legs made her feel
