Dr. Glen Swartwout graduated Magna Cum Laude with honors in Environmental Earth Sciences and Chemistry from Dartmouth College, and received his doctorate at the top of his class in Vision Science with honors in Optics as well as Leadership, being inducted into both Beta Sigma Kappa and the Gold Key Honor Societies at the State University of New York in Manhattan, where he trained at the largest outpatient vision clinic in the world. Welcome to my world. It is a world of healing... where all things are possible, because it is a living, sentient world. I have lived in this wondrous world for thirty years, not counting working as a Vision Therapy Assistant in my father's office in High School and interning at the largest outpatient vision clinic in the world during my doctoral training. In that time, I have seen many things that are not explainable in the models of science I studied at Dartmouth and the State University of New York. I have witnessed a number of healings that defy textbook proclamations of irreversibility, including restoration of sight to the blind.

I find myself no longer relying on the limiting views of science as currently taught, though I prize the knowledge base of observation they draw upon. I look at these same observations now, and begin to see what might be. My mind seeks to know the mind of our creator who manifests such an intricate and individualized world, and yet such a coherent and synergistic world when we can step aside from the ego and reason long enough to actually pay attention to what is with us here and now, directly in our own sensorium.

When I think about delving into the investigation of each unique individual seeking healing, I imagine looking at a snapshot in time of this wondrous machinery of life... a living machine... the bio-body suit through which our soul is gifted this opportunity to develop, learn, grow... to err and to heal. I think of Mother Theresa who described her prayer life of conversing with the divine as mostly listening. And when asked about God's communication with her, she said mostly He listens. Healing for me, whether private and personal, or as a shepherd for those seeking a guide, is a deeply contemplative practice. A life in itself... a calling.

I no longer live in the world of commerce, but healing remains always at the core of my ministry...The Heart of Healing. As a doctor licensed by various states, my mission was also entwined with invisible third parties in the room, entangled with red tape of forms and contracts, and bound always with the notion of scarcity that is at the foundation of commerce. My prayer now is to become a good doctor for the church, this transcendent body of living souls, viable children of God in this womb of Heaven.

When I was 30, I learned that I was on a course that would surely end my life before age 40. I am now 56 at this writing. Everything I needed to make the needed course correction was available in God's grand design. Healing is free... freely given and freely received. Preface to the Third Edition

This book began to form when I was asked to speak at a conference of the International College of Applied Nutrition in Tokyo, Japan. I had become a Fellow in the College out of interest in the clinical application of nutrition in preventing and healing eye diseases, and I was just beginning my practice as a Doctor of Optometry, having founded the Optometric Center of Tokyo as my first office, with Japan's number two optical company, Sanki Gankyo, supporting my research in Vision Improvement.

The book took its next step toward incarnation as the research behind a one page handout designed to support patient education in my practice in New York, which became part of a clinical study reprinted as an appendix to this book.

The actual first publication as a book was by Achievement of Excellence Research Academy International based in Hawaii, where I continued my clinical explorations of accelerated self-healing based on biocommunication. The Remission Foundation published the second edition.

Literature research was also added to this book in preparation as co-author of Natural Eyecare: An Encyclopedia: Complementary Treatments for Improving and Saving Your Eyes, written with Marc Grossman, O.D., L.Ac., and published by Keats in 1999. Information rejected for inclusion in that book by Keats is made available here, since the author finds that a more comprehensive reference guide to natural remedies is often clinically useful.

Cataract

Cataracts form in a myriad of different patterns, and are caused in at least as many ways. Cataracts can be found at birth due to toxic conditions in the prenatal environment. Cataracts can be caused by trauma. Posterior subcapsular cataracts can advance rapidly in middle age, and are usually related to digestion and immune function. Poor regulation of sugar metabolism causes many cataracts, as does impaired liver function. Most cataracts change slowly over time, eventually disturbing vision so much that surgery is needed to remove the entire lens from inside the eye.

Prevention is especially effective in the early stages, where most people can begin to attain improved lens health in the first four weeks.

Why this book?

The purpose of this book is to help you, and maybe even your doctor, realize that there is much more that can be done for a person developing cataracts than the conventional watch it until it is ripe for surgery. In my decades of clinical experience, when we begin to take different actions, outcomes change remarkably.

I have spent 30 years helping thousands of people improve their visual health and fitness. Most of us would be expected to require cataract surgery about 5 years before we die. By preventing and reversing the beginnings of cataract, we can add to both quality and quantity of life, since those who live the longest also suffer the least from years of degenerative diseases.

The crystalline lens is simply the visible tip of the body's health (or degeneration) iceberg... It can save our lives like a canary in a coalmine.

Because the crystalline lens is the densest protein in the body, it is sequestered the farthest from its circulatory source of nutrition and detoxification. Because of the organic sulfur content that gives the lens this dense structure, it also stores any toxic load of mercury, such as from dental amalgams, longer than any other body tissue. Because it must be clear to allow light into the body for vision, the eye is the only interior tissue not protected from environmental ionizing radiation such as the sun's UV rays, and other high-energy photons that can trigger free radical pathology associated with aging processes.
