About this ebook

Handy info for those moments when the cultural logic might not be so easily guessed, practical tips without the hassle of google, some clues of which direction in this sprawling metropolis to head, or for those simply want to see something uniquely Hungarian they might not be likely to wander into by accident.

Inside find a few perspectives on the usual tourist spots, a few undiscovered curiosities, descriptions of the districts to encourage self-guided wanderings, and some hints on what emerging craft beer to choose or what menu choice might appeal once you get there. Day trip options allow for oxygenated respite should the need arise; the brief history and reading list will assist in understanding what's going on inside the local's heads. And transport and other practicalities info should render a traditional guidebook unnecessary, allowing the more adventurous traveller to get on with the lovely business of dropping into a city and following one's nose.

    About the Author

    Welcome to Budapest.

Hot springs breaking through limestone mountains supplying water of 35-76 degrees centigrade gave rise to a flourishing culture of spas in the Roman Age and made Budapest one of the most popular spa cities of Europe. . . Ahem. Sorry, confused ourselves with Lonely Planet there for a moment.

Budapest, a city split between the fourth and fifth letters by the Danube, is in the post-dogshit-everywhere, pre-starbucks-everywhere age. If you walk uphill on a street flanked by harsh green trees and you haven’t encountered any means of public transport in the last 20 minutes, you are on the Buda side. If you walk the same distance at sea level for a while in a street filled with cars, buses, trolleybuses and trams and haven’t encountered any kind of vegetation in the last 20 minutes, you are on the Pest side. - Nagy Tyukos Ádám

This is not a guide book. This is a cheat sheet for those who don't like guide books but could still use some handy info for those moments when the cultural logic might not be so easily guessed, practical tips without the hassle of google, some clues of which direction in this sprawling metropolis to head, or for those simply want to see something uniquely Hungarian they might not be likely to wander into by accident.

Vaci utca is actually rather lovely at 11pm when no one else is there and all the warm yellow streetlights cast the classical architecture in a pale, romantic glow.
