Fog has rolled in, wrapping its fuzzy arms around the hillsides. With the densely packed trees, it’s hard to see beyond a few feet. No wonder the Roman legions called this place the Silva Nigra—the Black Forest. At any moment, long-haired warriors could come charging out of that deep darkness. Only, it’s an older German couple in matching waterproof jackets that materializes out of the fog. ‘Guten Tag,’ they nod. The Black Forest in southern Germany is no longer a remote and foreboding place, but one of the busiest and most popular regions for vacationing in Germany.
