Inspiring is a GREAT Feeling: Everyone thinks their books will change the world. They want to become famous and make millions. But what about inspiring others? Being an author/writer is more than just writing. It's about inspiring others. Here's my story. I went to get my taxes done, I know everyone groan, I use the same person every year he is in his late 70's. He was talking about writing a book a couple years ago. I told him I was a writer/author and we talked for a while. The next year he was contemplating about the different avenues in which to publish and how much it cost. We talked more. This year I go there and he smiled. 'I published my book.' He went over to a drawer and pulled out his book. He tells me, if it wasn't for me, he would have never taken that first step and published. It's a boy scout book, with camp fire spooky stories. With all the legends and how the camp came to be. He was a boy scout at this camp. The camp is still open today, he made is money back and all proceeds go to the camp. He wrote an inscription to me and handed me the book. My husband was so proud and I was almost speechless. I may not be famous or a millionaire. My books may not have changed anything, but being a writer did plus, he saved me money on my taxes, *grin* That was a great feeling, me inspiring someone. Someone who indeed is very profitable in selling his book. I guess it stems back when I first started out looking for answers, before I published. I asked an indie author a couple questions. Someone, everyone loves and I to loved her books. But she got snotty with me and made me feel like an idiot. Well dah! I have never done this before, I don't know what I am doing. I don't buy her books anymore either, just because of that fact. So at that point I decided I would never do that to someone else if they asked for help or information. And it has paid off, in my eyes. Facts about me: Favorite person-Husband Favorite color is - red Favorite vehicle - ford (69 mustang mach1 boss 429) Dream Car. Favorite foods - bacon & bbq ribs Favorite time of year - spring Zodiac sign - Pisces Movies - Overboard, 27 Dresses, The Ugly Truth, Pretty Woman, Under Siege 1&2, Comando extra... Music - Areosmith, Poison, ACDC, Little River Band, Boston, Pink Floyd, Pat Benatar, extra...

    Prologue

Kate had an uneasy feeling about That Woman, as she called her, also known as Christine. Her intuition told her that Christine was evil in some way. Kate also felt she was after Max. But talking to Max about this was useless. Max and the Christine have worked side by side for years. She knew he wouldn’t listen and would figure Kate was jealous. Kate wanted to figure out Christine’s intentions but it had to be on her own. She knew everything isn’t what it seems most of the time. Little did she know what she would uncover. It will shock everyone in the Society and may even tear it apart.

The Society has been around for years. New leaders, new people were the only things that have changed. They go where the law can’t reach. They save and rescue people, find out who is betraying the government. They go so deep undercover at times they lose themselves and turn against those who are trusted the most. Everything has a price and many pay that price. When worse comes to worse, trust no-one, but yourself.

    CHAPTER 1

Happy anniversary! Everyone shouted as Max and Kate walked into his parent's house. Kate couldn’t believe that Max remembered. She looked up at him, he was all smiles.

How could I ever forget the second most important day of my life? Max looked down at her.

Kate had a funny look on her face. The second most?

Max laughed. The most important day of my life is the day I met you.

Kate got tears in her eyes. Oh Max, I love you so much. She reached up to him. Max picked her up and gave her a long passionate kiss. Then they heard the crowd hooting and hollering. Max could tell by the look in Kate’s eyes he would have an extremely good night when they got home. He wanted the party to end early.

But Kate always knew one day Max would get called away on an assignment. She always hoped it would be later then sooner. Kate picked up on the signals at work when a sleeper was contacted. It was so clever the way they did it.

In the morning at meetings is where the contacts would happen. If Greg started the meetings off like, Listen up, Listen up instead of Listen up. That meant sleepers pay attention. She would notice certain people stare, including Max. Greg would look into the crowd of men for whom he was directing his orders to. He would give a slight nod and so would the sleeper. He would talk in terms of working and say things like. "It has to be done by tomorrow or you have two days. Then he would end things and say, okay everyone let’s get to work," and end the meeting. Kate got to know who some of these sleepers were, by them not showing the next day. She kept this information to herself. She thought it might come in handy one day. She noticed though, that every time the orders were issued. Max would close his eyes for a second. Wishing them luck, and being thankful it wasn’t him. Sometimes she did get a little confused on the orders. Like the one issued to Max, but she always figured them out.

It was a day she dreaded. It was Thursday morning and her and Max was waiting for the mornings meeting. Greg was little late getting it started. When he came out he said Listen up, Listen up. Everyone got still. Max’s attention went right to him. Kate saw Greg stare right at Max and her heart dropped. Max’s face changed and his eyes grew cold. Greg nodded, so did Max.

We have a big problem with the bits. They are being recalled. I want them all taken out and brought to me at the end of the day. They need to be returned by Friday and replaced with new ones by Monday, or there will be hell to pay.

What do you think that’s about Max? Why do you think they are being recalled? Kate asked. But Max didn’t answer her. He just kept looking at Greg. Max? Max! she repeated.

Max looked down at her, his eyes were cold and he said. I don’t know.

Greg ended the meeting. Let’s get to work, and he turned and left.

Kate knew if she didn’t question Max more, he would get suspicious.

Max! she shouted. She put her hands on her hips glaring up at him.

He looked down at her. Kate, we have lots to do. Let’s go. And he turned and walked away from her.

This made Kate furious with Max! At least he could give her some kind of explanation, something. He is just flat out ignoring her! She knew he had some kind of assignment, but still.

Max didn’t know how he was going to tell Kate he had an assignment. It was the first one he's been on in over a year. He has been to meetings at the compound several times. But he hasn’t been on an assignment. He has to prepare himself. He has to concentrate on the job at hand, and he also has to deal with Kate. This was going to be hard. And he doesn't know how he was going to do it.

The rest of the day everyone was taking out the bits and returning them to Greg. They had to use the really small drills to drill the holes now. It took three times longer and it was twice as hard. Max was quiet. He was concentrating on the job. Kate tried talking to him several times. But he just ignored her, and she was getting more and more upset with him.

When they got home Kate jumped out of the truck, and slammed the door. She went stomping into the house. She threw her work stuff on the floor and went stomping down the hall. She was slamming every door she went though.

Max realized how mean he was to her. When he got in the house she was already in the shower. He knocked on the door and stepped inside. The bathroom was all steamed up. She was taking a really hot shower. He knew she was trying to use all the hot water.

Max cleared his throat. Kate, I am sorry.

Kate turned the shower off. She was glaring at him. His eyes weren’t as cold, but he still didn’t have the Max look she always saw in them. She grabbed her towel stepped out of the shower. And walked right passed him without saying a word.

Kate please I said I am sorry. He turned and watched her. She still didn’t answer him. She was doing to him what he did to her. He closed the bathroom door and got in the shower.

Kate got dressed went into the kitchen, and started cooking dinner. She turned on the water in the sink. She knew the water would go cold on Max.

    Kate! Max yelled.

She heard him yell her name, and she laughed Take that!

When he got out, he was standing in the hallway looking into the kitchen. He only had on a towel. He was dripping wet and knew this turned her on. He thought he would make it up to her, for being so rude to her the whole day. Was that fun Kate? He had a small grin.

She turned to look at him. She drew in a quick breath and started to shiver. But when she looked into his eyes, she didn’t see her Max. His eyes looked so cold and distant. She wasn’t going to love a man that wasn’t her Max. She quickly turned around and continued with dinner.

Max stood there puzzled at her reactions. He saw her gasp, shiver. He saw her hunger for him, but yet she turned away from him.

He walked up to her slowly. Kate, what is wrong with you?

Nothing Max. she replied, but she wouldn’t look at him. She knew if she did, she would be all over him. Besides, she was still upset with him.

He grabbed her arm and spun her around. Kate?

When he grabbed her she got angry. When were you going to tell me Max? she quickly said and pulled her arm away.

He looked at her questionably. Tell you what Kate?

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She had to calm down. That you had an assignment.

Max’s jaw dropped. How did she know? She was with him all day. She never spoke to anyone. Kate how… He started to say.

Don’t underestimate me Max, I caught on. I know the signals at the meetings. I know how the assignments are delivered. I know who gets them. She stood looking up at him.

She really surprised him by all this. How did you figure this out Kate? And if you have, how do you know I have one?

Kate looked at him and grinned. Let’s see, you have to leave Friday night, and whatever you have to do has to be done by Sunday. How’s that for figuring things out?

Max just stood there in amazement. Who else knows you know this Kate?

    No one Max. she replied.

You are full of surprises Kate. Are you sure my father hasn’t recruited you? he smiled a bit.

No Max he hasn’t. Not yet. She said in such a sharp tone.

Max didn’t like the way she said it, especially the not yet part. He bent down to kiss her and she pushed him away.

Kate, why are you pushing me away?

Your eyes Max, it’s not you. They chill me when I look into them. I want to love my Max. she said and turned her head.

This hurt Max, but he could feel the difference in him when he got his orders. And he knew she could sense them. He didn’t push the issue. He went back into the bathroom and looked at himself, and he saw what she did. And his eyes did look chilling. But he had to prepare himself. He couldn’t have any distractions. No matter how hard he would try, he knew Kate wouldn’t leave his mind. And those are the distractions that get people killed.

Kate knew Max was preparing for what he had to do. She didn’t question him. He was quiet, he would glance at her. She would give him a faint smile, as if she could understand. But she is terrified on the inside.

This made him feel so much better, she was so amazing. He couldn’t wait for this to be over. He was nervous leaving her. He didn’t know how she would react when he got back. That night they both had a hard time sleeping. But they held each other tight.

    The next day at work,
