    Chapter I. Fair.

    Sweat was beading up and running salty trails down Jen’s skin. Without noticing it, she was picking up the excited energy of the hundreds of others who surrounded her. The crush of bodies under the hot sun was overwhelming, but she felt like she needed to be there, at her college’s student-organization activities fair. Her best friend, with whom she’d spent most of her time during their first two years at school, had moved to London at the end of the summer. Since then she’d spent most of her time on Skype or Netflix, so she felt like she needed to start socializing in the flesh again and the fair was an easy way to be exposed to new people. She felt shy around new people and large groups, but the fact that they’d organized themselves according to interest made the fair easier for her to stomach.

    Human contact, Jen thought, that’s what I need. She looked down the impossibly long tables covered with candy and flyers, and saw students paired off, enthusiastically talking to one another about their passions. She wandered past the theater and choir groups. She was pretty and sang well, so she had been in musicals and choirs in high school but was too self-conscious to audition for anything in college. Her best friend had insisted that they do something, and so she reluctantly became the stage manager for the shows her best friend was in their freshman year. She didn’t really enjoy the position itself. But she would oftentimes find herself at cast parties where the influence of so many drunken attractive people caused her to make decisions she would be mortified of making in any other situation, and she enjoyed that perk of the position more than she cared to admit. She believed she saw some familiar faces among the representatives at the theater tables, but couldn’t be sure.

    I’d probably recognize some of you better with your clothes off, she thought, and that would probably be a better recruiting tool for your group.

    Not wanting to make the incidental eye contact that would draw her into a far-too-long conversation that might end up with her being awkwardly recognized for something she would rather not be associated with, she looked down at the event map and picked up her pace. After a few yards, she stole one last glance behind her to see if she was in
