First Impressions
Chapter One
(What’s that old saying about lasting impressions?)
Peter dropped the file down on the desk with a loud thud. I need someone to work late tonight,
he declared shortly. Who would you suggest?
Mark, his middle aged accountant looked up with a little grin. Try asking Brian,
he suggested wryly.
Peter gave him a sharp glance, but shrugged his shoulders indifferently.
He strode out onto the loading bay where several of his workers were loading up a small van.
Brian!
Peter called out, and a thick set man of about forty looked across at him.
What can I do for you, boss?
Brian asked looking up at his tall, slender employer.
I need someone to stay on a bit late tonight, to help me load up the red van when the shipment’s ready. Mark suggested you.
His brown eyes asked the question as he swept an impatient hand through his dark blond hair.
Brian grinned broadly. No problem boss, I’ll be glad to work late tonight.
Brian looked almost relieved at the prospect of working late, and Peter looked at him curiously.
Seeing his boss’s puzzled glance made Brian’s grin widened engagingly.
Don’t ask unless you really want to know,
he suggested impishly.
There was a general laughter that only served to increase his curiosity. Go on then,
Peter sighed with a little tolerant smile. I really want to know.
Brian laughed. It’s no big deal really, it’s just that the wife is having her sisters around for a girly night, and I was wondering what I was going to do with myself.
There was a chorus of laughter, and a couple of calls of things like; coward
and chicken.
They can’t be that bad, surely?" Peter protested.
Including my Pam, there’s six of em,
Brian explained. And when they get together with a couple or so bottles of wine, like they are planning on tonight...
He hesitated with a slightly pained expression. Well let’s just say that there’s no room for me in their little party.
Peter had briefly met Brian’s wife Pam, she was little with light brown hair, and bright blue eyes. He also remembered how quiet and polite she had been, with a sweet smile and a calm manner. He tried to imagine another five of her, all merry with wine.
His mouth curved upwards into a smile. Excellent!
He grinned appreciatively.
**
By the time the little red van had been loaded and sent off to make its early morning deliveries, it was gone nine o’clock in the evening.
Peter told Brian he could go and thanked him for staying on to help.
No problem boss,
Brian grinned. I should get back just in time to chauffer them all home.
That doesn’t seem very fair.
Peter frowned.
Brian gave a little chuckle. Oh I don’t mind,
he murmured softly. They’re good girls really, and they had a rotten time of it last year when their mum took ill the way that she did.
Yes I remember when she died.
Peter commiserated softly; he’d seen Pam with another young woman.
They had both looked absolutely devastated. He remembered how stunning he’d thought the other woman was, with her dark hair and those bright blue eyes, all blood shot and red rimmed from crying. Peter was surprised at how much her likeness had stuck in his memory, it had to have been more than a year ago, but her image swam before his eyes as fresh and clear as though it had only been but a moment ago.
Yes it was tough for all of them, especially so soon after they had lost their dad.
He gave another little smile. And so now, once a month or so they all get together at one of their homes, and tonight it’s our turn.
Go on then,
Peter nodded with a smile. I’ll lock up here, and I’ll see you in the morning.
Night boss.
Goodnight Brian.
Peter walked around the building checking that everything had been shut down, switched off and locked up properly.
He set the building’s alarm and made his way to the car park.
He frowned as he saw another car in the car park; his should be only the only one here now.
As he closed in on the other car he realised that the hood was up on it and Brian was staring glumly at the engine.
Problem?
Peter called as he neared the other man.
Damn thing won’t start!
Brian swore.
The two men looked at the engine, tinkered with this and kicked that, but neither of them were mechanics, so in the end they both gave up in disgust.
Come on Brian,
Peter sighed. I’ll give you a lift home.
As they pulled up outside Brian’s home all looked quiet and still. As Brian opened the car door however the sound of laughter could clearly be heard. Brian gave a pained expression, just as a pizza delivery van pulled up.
Brian looked at Peter, his face lighting up with a little grin. It looks like we’re just in time for supper,
he said with a questioning lift of his brow.
Peter laughed as his stomach growled; reminding him that he’d not eaten for several hours. That does sound good,
he grinned as he climbed out of his car.
He pressed his key and the car beeped and flashed to say it was locked up tightly.
The delivery man was just coming back to his van, shaking his head slightly and a bit of a dazed grin on his face.
Good luck mates,
he murmured as they passed him. It’s a bit manic in there!
Brian looked at Peter’s slightly worried expression and laughed. They’re not that bad, honest!
he reassured.
The laughter had died down as they quietly entered the house, but the two men sniffed appreciatively as the freshly cooked food hit their nostrils.
Have you got enough food there for a couple more mouths?
Brian asked sticking his head round the door.
Brian!
The feminine voices chorused.
As Peter followed him through the door he found himself fixed by six sets of bright blue eyes. And a whole host of cheerful, if slightly inebriated grins.
Pam was just as he remembered her, with her light hair and a calm manner, but her bright eyes were positively sparkling tonight, as she relaxed in the company of her siblings. The other girls, well women actually all were of similar height and build, but their features differed dramatically, as did their hair colouring and style. Some had long fair hair others short dark hair.
The woman he had remembered was also there, and he felt his gaze constantly being pulled in her direction. She was just as he remembered her, with the shoulder length black hair and those incredible eyes. Her little pointed nose that had a look of pride to it, and every so often she would tilt her head, to listen better to one of her sisters and he would see a flash of – arrogance he supposed. He suspected, that she could use that look to lethal effect if you were to risk her ire. She was stunning even if in a slightly superior way and he felt his interest in her intensifying.
She sat quietly among the chatter of the other sisters, listening to the waves of conversation, but contributing little to it herself.
He was aware of being studied by one or another of the sisters on occasion, obviously Brian had mentioned him to his wife who in turn had discussed him with her siblings, what he didn’t know was what Brian might have said, and the conclusions these ladies may have reached.
He was unaware of the fact that they knew he was Brian’s new young boss come in to take over the running of the family firm. That Brian had gone on to Pam about how his young boss was a great guy; charming and good natured with his staff, always polite and civil, and genuinely interested in the people who now worked for him.
They also knew that he was young free and single, and in typical female fashion they were sizing him up for a little matchmaking.
On more than one occasion Peter caught a furtive glance from HER, which she would quickly disengage from if he happened to catch her eye, and he came to the conclusion that she must be incredibly shy and retiring.
Brian had been busy telling Pam how his car had died on him, hence the presence of Peter. So I’m afraid ladies; that you’ll have to call for a taxi tonight,
he announced regretfully.
That’s okay,
Peter spoke up quietly. I don’t mind stepping in Brian, since you were so helpful at work.
The general chorus of thank you
and what a nice man!
and so forth was a good brush along his feel good senses, but the quiet one he noticed remain silent and kept her thoughts to herself.
The food and the remainder of the wine were quickly consumed and the general chaos of departing commenced. It was amazing to Peter how many final things they simply had to tell each other before taking their leave, they’d spent the evening together for heaven’s sake! Surely most of this could have been said by then?
Finally though they were outside by his car.
Oh damn!
one of them suddenly announced. I’ve forgotten my bag.
She turned to the quiet one, her look beseeching. Dee, be a love and nip back for it would you?
So Dee, he thought to himself, now she had a name, Dee frowned suspiciously at her sister but walked back to the house where Pam and Brian stood in the doorway ready to wave them
