Half-Breed
Chapter One
Dream
It was Saturday, December 15th, my eighteenth birthday. My boyfriend, Tyler Martin, and I were headed to our school’s winter formal. The December air outside was chilly, but not particularly cold.
We were quiet as we drove through the streets of Rosedale, Oklahoma. I spun the silver rose ring; the one Tyler had given me earlier that day, around my finger.
Dream?
Tyler said suddenly.
Huh?
I answered.
Are you alright? You’ve hardly said a word all day.
Yeah, I’m fine.
It was a lie. I didn’t know why I felt so depressed. Perhaps it was because I just turned eighteen, and my future loomed ahead of me.
Maybe it was because I had no clue, no idea, who I really was. I didn’t know my family; I had been adopted as a baby. It had been hard for me growing up and it hadn’t gotten any easier.
We stayed quiet the rest of the way. When we pulled in front of the school, the parking lot was already full of cars.
Tyler parked the car and got out. He walked around and let me out. He put his arm around my waist as we walked toward the gym where the dance was being held.
I sensed someone watching me. I had been getting that feeling all day. I stopped and looked around.
What is it Babe?
Tyler asked.
I got the feeling that someone was watching me.
I said.
Of course someone’s staring, you look beautiful tonight.
I smiled. Thank you.
We walked into the gym. It was decorated in white streamers, white balloons; everything was white. The theme was what else, White Winter.
How original.
I muttered sarcastically under my breath.
Obviously, I hadn’t been quiet enough, because a member of the dance committee shot me a venomous glare. I smiled sweetly and followed Tyler to a table. I had just sat down when my best friend, Kathryn, walked up to the table.
Happy birthday Dream.
Kathryn said as she shook out her shoulder length blonde hair.
Thanks.
I replied.
I’ll be right back Babe.
Tyler said. He gave me a kiss on the cheek before he took off to go talk to his friends.
Kathryn sat down next to me. So, what did he get you?
she asked.
I held out my hand and showed Kathryn the ring.
Oh, wow.
Kathryn smiled wickedly. What did you give him in return?
she asked.
Nothing.
I said curtly.
"You two still haven’t done it?"
No we haven’t. I’m not going to jump into bed with him just because he bought me a ring.
Okay, no need to get all bitchy.
Sorry, I haven’t been myself at all today.
It’s all right; turning 18 is a big deal.
You’re not even eighteen yet, Kathryn.
Well I imagine it being a big deal. Isn’t that how we all see it?
Yeah. I’ll be right back.
I said and stood up. I headed out into the hallway. I walked down the hall and started toward the bathroom.
When I got there I was surprised to find it empty. I examined myself in the mirror.
My long dark hair was fixed in loose waves. My skin was usually tan, but during the winter I was pale. My eyes were a startling shade of blue, like sapphires. Most people thought I wore contacts, but that was my actual eye color. Same with my hair, it was naturally jet-black.
I took a deep breath and headed back toward the gym. When I walked through the doors back into the gym I stopped short. Right beside the door I saw Tyler, he was making out with Kathryn. They hadn’t seen me yet.
I stood beside them. Excuse me.
I said.
Both Tyler and Kathryn looked at me. Tyler’s eyes were wide in surprise, but Kathryn was smiling.
Dream, I…
Tyler started.
Whatever.
I said.
Kathryn smirked. This is what you get for being such a prude.
She said.
Normally when I get mad I never think my actions through, I just lash out. This is how I ended up ramming my fist into Kathryn’s face.
I’d rather be a prude, than a slut.
I said. I took off my ring and handed it back to Tyler. And, because I could, I slapped him.
I walked through the crowd to the opposite side of the gym. I shoved the door that led to the back of the gym open. I began rummaging through my purse.
Some birthday present. Freaking asshole.
I mumbled.
Was that comment intended for me?
a voice asked from the darkness.
I looked up and saw the source of the voice. A guy, probably my age, stepped out of the shadows. He was almost 6’, and his hair was jet black and a few strands fell across his eyes. He had two piercings in his bottom lip, one on each side. He also had his eyebrow pierced. To add to his ‘goth, bad boy look’, he was smoking and wearing all black.
Wow, I thought. No, it wasn’t. Smoking is a bad habit, by the way.
I said.
The guy smiled. Said the girl with a pack of cigarettes in her purse.
He said. He had a slight accent, I’m not sure what it was, maybe Irish.
I smiled and took a cigarette out of the box. Right, well I only smoke occasionally. For example: when I’m pissed, like right now.
I looked in my purse again. Do you have a light?
No, I used magic to light mine.
I stared at him and he smiled. I had to admit, this guy was dangerously gorgeous.
You could’ve just said yes.
I said. I put the cigarette in my mouth and he lit it.
I’m Keiran. Keiran Messer.
He introduced himself.
Dream.
What?
My name. It’s Dream. Dream Rodriguez.
Really?
No.
I said with a smile.
Wanna tell me your real name?
"No. You wanna tell me why you’re skulking around behind the gym?"
Only if you tell me why you are.
You first.
I was flirting, but I didn’t have a boyfriend anymore so I could if I wanted to.
I start here on Monday. I’m just checking it out. So far,
Keiran looked me up and down. I like what I see.
I rolled my eyes. How very subtle.
He smiled. Now you. I bet your story is far more interesting than mine.
Oh, well I just caught my boyfriend making out with my supposed best friend.
Ouch. What did you do?
I smiled. I punched her and slapped him.
Keiran chuckled. Nice. Why did you come out here though?
I really needed a cigarette and I was planning on walking home.
You’re going to walk home … dressed like that?
Keiran asked incredulously.
I looked down at what I was wearing. An ice blue, knee length halter dress. It would have been okay except for the fact that I was wearing spiky black heels, which were about three and a half inches high.
I shrugged, Well I don’t really have a choice. Tyler was my ride, and there’s no way in hell I’m going to ask him to take me home.
I took a final drag from
