The History of New York City
1524 The land that became New York City was inhabited by Lenape Native Americans when it was discovered by European Giovanni da Verrazzano of Florence.
1614 A Dutch fur trading settlement was founded. It was soon called New Amsterdam.
1626 Dutch colonial governor Peter Minuit bought the land of Manhattan from the Lenape for 60 guilders,
