THERE are few large business hubs in the world that create as much excitement and admiration as New York. The Big Apple, as it’s affectionately known, is a place of global economic power and cultural diversity.
EARLY INHABITANTS
The area had been inhabited by Native American tribes for thousands of years by the time the first European settlers arrived. The first Dutch families settled on what’s now called Governors Island off the southern tip of Manhattan Island in 1624 and, two years later, the colony of New Amsterdam was established on Manhattan Island.
When the , it was renamed after King Charles (later King James II).
