Chapter 1

Jerry Aronstein lay in the hospital bed slowly becoming aware of his surroundings. The bowel surgery, which had taken place on such a rushed basis on Christmas Eve, resulted in a dazed semi-conscious understanding that he was in a private hospital room.

Any attempt to move was greeted by instant rebellious pain and as Jerry slowly and gingerly began to inspect his body there were tubes and attachments at all places previously unthought of by him.

In the midst of his perception he heard his adult children excitedly observing that daddy was awake and as he looked up he saw the family crowding around his bed with the anxious drawn expression on his wife’s face closest in proximity.

The first day and night in hospital remained in Jerry’s mind a blur of alternating pain and discomfort. Faceless, kindly nurses attended to various tasks, tubes, drips, oxygen tubes, all with a cheery and irrelevant attention.

By the second or third day, however, Jerry was now agile in dealing with the few remaining tubes and the welcome long silences gave him time to think.

Time to think in solitude is one of life’s luxuries assuming a capacity to do so. Many people, pushed and pulled by the rapid forces of daily existence, find little time to think. Most people, freed momentarily from the daily bustle, seek refuge in entertainment at which time they welcome the ability to switch off. Jerry, on the other hand, having been trained in the secrets of mysticism, found the time precious and welcome.

Was he going to die? He was really not prepared for death. In his middle sixties, Jerry had taken a long time to learn how to live. The process of learning how to live had been an extended and difficult one for Jerry because he was, like most people, totally unequipped with even the basic skills. It was only through many meetings with the Mystic, who Jerry now loved dearly, that he slowly and at first clumsily began to learn the tools of how to live as opposed to exist.

He had over many years learned to live a life focused on purpose and one which allowed him to realize his full inner potential. To his initial amazement Jerry found that this had nothing to do with the values held to be self-evident by general society. So it was that by the time he was shocked to see the blood on his pajama pants, Jerry’s life had become ordered, balanced and happy.

Children, grand-children and a wife he adored made Jerry a blessed man. He had sufficient money and until he sighted the blood, good health. Much more important, Jerry had learned to utilize his blessings in a manner which fulfilled him totally, a skill discovered by very few people.

Standing in the bathroom, holding the slightly pink stained pajama pants, Jerry instinctively thrust them behind him as his wife had entered unexpectedly. Refusing to
