    You’re anal.

    What? said Mitch.

T.J. Bump leaned his bare-armed thickness across the bar table, clinking the ashtray as he ground out the Export A he’d smoked down to the filter. He pushed his half-done beer glass and Mitch’s empty Sprite to one side so he could jab both hands past it, and pressed his meaty palms down hard on the table top. His voice was New York thick.

You asked me why I won’t take you into the group. I’m telling you. You’re anal.

Mitch leaned back and considered that. As in anal retentive.

    Yuh.

They were interrupted then by the waitress - a pretty, anorexic redhead in a tight white tube top who was probably yet another out-of-work actress - stopping at their table and asking brightly, You two okay?

It jerked Mitch’s head up to do another check of the room. It stank. Strong smell of old beer that must be five or six generations deep in the dark-patterned rug, turned rancid with the cigarette smoke. Poor air-conditioning too so that the sticky heat of the Greenwich Village August night sloshed down through the door every time the door opened.

    At least it was quiet.
