    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS AND NOTES

As much as we like to think that writing comedy is a solitary job, it isn't.

I mean, unless you're part of a writing team or one member of a writing staff, it is a solitary job once you sit down to your Typewriter/Laptop/Dictaphone/Siri connected word processor/Mind controlled 3D iProjector (Scheduled to come out in 2019.) and start writing down the funny.

But at a certain point, you need to show it to other people, if for no other reason to confirm that what you've written actually has jokes and not just joke like objects.

(A joke like object being something that has the structure and cadence of a joke but feels mechanical and devoid of humor. If you want examples, just listen to Mitt Romney anytime he talks about how rich he is.)

And only a righteous prick would actually believe that he could write comedy without feedback.

Since I work very hard at not being a righteous prick. Let me take a moment to thank some of the people who helped with this book, whether they realize it or not.

The first thank you goes to Joshua Heuertz. In 2005, he created a theatrical experience called The Neo-Variety Show. The format was simple. The show lasted exactly one hour. During that hour, audience members would choose the scenes they wanted to see from a numbered menu. When the hour was up, the show was over. Even if it was in the middle of a scene, it stopped.

It was a thrilling way to do a live show. And if my work schedule couldn't allow me to act in it, I was at least going to help out in some way.

The pieces I wrote for it were Glengarry Glen Styx, The Greatest PSA Ever Made, The Line of Eternal Optimism and Revenge of The Lonely Diner. (I also wrote a short two-page scene called US Foreign Policy In a Nutshell. It's not included in this collection because 1) I can't find it in my files and 2) It is the most insanely didactic piece I've ever written. I may include it in my next volume, Political Pieces that Have Not Aged Well.)

By the time I finished them, it was too late to include them in the then performance cycle but Joshua said he'd include them in the next round.

    Sadly, that never
