All Tied Up

I’m called an aspiring actress because even though I have six years of experience in independent theatre-oh, right, what’s independent theatre? Well, you know independent film? No big budget or stars, just people doing it for the love of making movies?

Independent theater is the same. Small budgets, everyone has a day job, we’re all tired and broke, yet we give up holidays, vacations and clean laundry to work in black box studios, basements or the back rooms of bars, performing original productions we write, act, costume and design ourselves.

If I sound defensive, it’s because although me and every other small time director and actor trumpet our indie credentials as real and authentic, in our heart of little sellout hearts, we are not doing it for the pure love of art any more than the filmmakers.

We are all trying to make contacts, network, invite any and all industry and reviewers we know to see our work so we can stop performing in toilets and get a real acting gig with a dressing room and a wider audience than our small circle of loyal friends.

Or, maybe even a toothpaste commercial that would pay us enough to produce at least twenty crappy plays that no one would see.

That’s why I was at a music video network promo spot audition to read for Spanking Girl #2. The male VJ, an aging heartthrob from a 90’s band turned TV show host for Rock The Ages, a where-are-they-now show about one hit wonders of the past thirty years, was supposed to run a gauntlet of hot girls with paddles and my line was, Take that!

I practiced, Take that, Take THAT, TAKE that! in my bathroom mirror for two days with my sultry look, my who-me innocent look, my sexy but knowing look, etc. I prepared more for that audition than anyone would think sane because if I got it, everyone I know who wasn’t an actor, like my family, would think I was on my way to making it in showbiz.
