    Prologue

Rhiannon knew her time was limited. She also knew she had to finish the letters to her grandchildren before Azrael came for her. She had to explain. She’d promised the kids parents, that she would never reveal the family secrets. But writing letters isn’t actually telling them, is it? Not to mention, I’ll be dead when they receive them so how could they be angry with me? she smiled wistfully though no one alive could see her.

Rhiannon’s own children turned away from their gifts long ago. They ran away from their upbringing and practically from Rhiannon herself when on that day long ago their father was killed by the demon Asmodeys in front of their young eyes. Later, as they became adults and had families of their own, they made their mother promise never to speak to their children, her grandchildren, of magic and the supernatural. Though it broke her heart, in order to see them she promised never to tell these children of her heart and blood, their true lineage.

Although saddened by her children’s choices to turn their backs on their past filled with magical creatures and mystical forces, Rhiannon could on some level understand their reasons. It’s hard to lose a parent, much less one to violence, and certainly much less by a demon. She understood their need to keep their own children safe from the past, while at the same time, she knew that her grandchildren needed to be aware of their futures.

And so it was for Rhiannon who stood by visiting, watching, knowing that one day, the fates of her beloved grandchildren would have to be revealed. There were things about them that needed to be shared. Things that their given names would prepare them for. Their destinies - if only they knew.

If only I was able to talk to them. To explain them.

But she couldn’t. All she could tell them when they were younger is that when a child is born he or she is given a name which a spirit guide helps their parents choose. This is the name that will help that child during their lifetime and beyond. Everyone’s name had been written in the stars many years before they were born. Rhiannon longed to share her heritage, their heritage, but she couldn’t if she wanted to be a part of their lives.

Rhiannon’s beloved grandchildren would need these warnings more than most others. And there was only one way. Bring them home, she whispered to the wind in dark as she stepped onto the front porch of her old cabin.

As she reflected on her grandchildren and their names, she smiled and she knew what her children had obviously forgotten. Her children didn’t totally abandon their heritage after all whether they knew it or not.

Anastasia, named as one who will rise again. The child who never fails to get up and dust herself off, no matter how many times she falls, and she seemed to fall more often than the rest.

Randolf, his name means guard wolf. He is the family protector,
