    Introduction

    I am one of 40 million Americans that work in a cubicle. Millions more live the office life at home. For a couple of years I had a two-hour daily commute. Then there’s the gym, laundry days and countless hours doing the dishes. While music fills some of these hours, millions like me are increasingly filling these hours with podcasts, particularly comedy podcasts. Many of these hosts go far beyond just making their audiences laugh. The very best engage their listeners over several platforms in a long term relationship that is mutually beneficial to everyone involved. They help us pass the time and we help them by being the audience that, despite their many talents, these comedians could not reach by other means.  

    According to the website eMarketer.com, between 2008 and 2010, the total podcasting audience grew from 15 million listeners to 50 million listeners. While the success of the podcast can be seen in all of its forms, in the realm of the comedy podcast in particular, the mainstream media has begun to take notice. Comedian Ricky Gervais’s show was so successful that it was adapted into a cartoon for HBO. The New York Times wrote a long, glowing feature on comedian Marc Maron’s podcast WTF with Marc Maron. Adam Carrolla’s daily podcast recently surpassed Gervais’s to become the most downloaded show in the history of podcasting, After several successful live podcasting tours, prominent filmmaker Kevin Smith
